He should still be brought back in tests ..I am not too convinced that Murali Vijay will succeed in SA,England or Australia .. his ODI and T20 days are behind him but still , He has much to offer, especially with Tendulkar's imminent retirement at end of SA series in SA in Dec-2013 ... Considering that Viru is still 34-35 ,I see this phase as similar to Tendulkar in 2006-2007 when everyone including Greg Chappell had written his career off ..we know Sachin bounced back in. 2008-2009 had amazing years during 2008-2011 ...so definitely there is a case to take Viru to SA ..he gives that x-factor to take the attack apart ..it was not too long back when he hit England attack out in Ahmedabad 2013 for a wonderful 100 resulting in first test win ..

Firstly, Sachin was still averaging around 45 during that phase of tennis elbow. I don't have the numbers right away but I feel Sehwag has had poor returns during this phase. Also, you can't compare Sachin and Sehwag for 2 reasons. 1) Sachin always had a tight technique to which he could go back to. And that's what he did during those 4 years. He cut down on the risks and played a tighter game. I don't think Sehwag has this luxury and once you start aging and the hand-eye coordination goes, you do tend to struggle. 2) More importanatly, Sachin has been the kind of a player who has looked to evolve his game. If you see, even in his pomp, Sachin would look to graft if the situation demanded. Sehwag has always been a more laid back character and who always looked to play the same brand of game. Te difference between their fitness levels is another difference.

Shaywag is a legend. Yes could have broken several more records if he was a bit more watchful or sensible in batting. Nevertheless legend. Best opener after SunnyG. I do think he had ability to be best, but was careless types.

IN hindsight we may say that he could have been more careful, but then we don't know if would hhave seen triple hundreds or Galle double hundred.

BTW, how does Watson's runs help the cause for Viru batting at 6? What I meant was that this may give him a fillip to score runs. He's a similar player to Watson and both have been struggling as openers.

If Viru gets a shot in the middle order, I'm pretty sure it would be the #4 or #5. And yes, it wouldn't hurt to try him down the order.

What is Sehwag doing nowadays? Any match practice? Or just aloo paranthas? Get him match practice, get him to #6 batting at SA maybe. Include him for SA-A tour - that will be a start to see how he can do in India-A 4 day match.

And also Watson is playing as an AR so attacking approach at 6 will be under less pressure.

Second new ball is tough but atleast the pitch and the bowlers would not be completely fresh. He can't survive against good fast bowling on bouncy wickets. But, this gives him more chance to score than being an opener.

When we finish our tour to Aus in 2015 (and world cup) he will be nearly 36-37.What exactly we gain by playing a 37 year old ? It is not like we need him in India either.We lost 2-1 to England and beat Aus 4-0 without him .And Dhoni ave nearly 90 in the Aus series batting at 6. I hope u arent suggesting we play him at 6 in Eng SA or Aus

Overseas, even no. 11 indian bat would be too early for second new ball. Looking at the current form of the team, par score would be around 250, which team would be getting in 8o overs or less. No need to worry about Sehwag facing second new ball, overseas.

Interesting anecdote : His first century in test career was in SA during 2001 tour playing at no.6 position..especially on one of the fastest wickets ..so may be , life may come full circle for him 12 years down the line :dance: After Sachin's Retirement , I would like to see this lineup in fast conditions 1.Murali Vijay 2.Shikhar Dhawan 3.Cheteshwar Pujara 4.Virat Kohli 5.Virender Sehwag 6.MS Dhoni 7.Ravindra Jadeja 8.Ravichandran Ashwin 9.Bhubaneshwar Kumar 10. He wouldn't make it to the SA tour. It seems impossible in such short notice. Its pretty much obvious that it might be Sachin's last series and the #4 slot can be filled by Kohli and #5 by Rahane/Rohit/Sehwag.
