They recently activated a nuclear reactor on one of our subs that was supposed to act as the 3rd part of a triad and carry these missiles most probably. I wonder how this accident affects all this. 3000km slbm is a long way of. I think they will try to get 750km sangrika operational first. Secondly that sub has a totally different design from this one. Even though this submarine was delivered in 1997, the actual design of the kilo class sub happened in the early 70s and late 70s. @sane its too early to say even now. Its not as if its been lost at sea or something. It seems to be that defence "experts" are getting an orgasm and rushing in with their views. India needs to move away from russian hardware. While some hardware like the Su-30MKI has been well designed and is a good bird. The vast majority has had all sorts of problems. $80 million in the context of defence is a very small sum. India is paying the price for not inducting any submarine in the last decade. Now the current fleet is getting old.

G_B_ Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 ^ dude it takes atleast 6-7 tests before you can make a missile operational. What they are trying to do is get a naval version of land based missile Agni 3 operational. Agni 3 itself is not 100% operational. It takes years. It will be sangrika (and its varients) till 2020 giving a range of 750-1000 km. Maybe once India has fixed which missile it wants to back for China we can then make a call. As of now the army and armed forces dont want to induct Agni 3 in great numbers as its a two stage missile system compared to a 3 stage Agni 5. You also have to keep in mind the arihant class sub, has a displacement of 6000 tonnes. It wont be able to carry more than 3-4 Agni 3 missiles (naval version) while it can carry many Sagrinka missiles. With a nuclear sub, the entire point is you have the capability to travelling right upto the enemy and firing at close range. Closer the range, higher the accuracy and harder for your foe to defend against it. Could be the case we reach a compomise. 2 arihant class subs carry the sagrikas and the other 2 carry navalised agni 3.

Mariyam Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 R.I.P A relative of mine stays at Mazgaon and she was saying that the explosion was so intense that the windows at their home, which must be a good 3-4 kms from the dock, rattled for a few seconds.

beetle Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 RIP :(( A submariners worst nightmare... The only saving grace is that that only 18 men were on night watch....had this happened at sea...the toll would have been much higher as surviving this in a submarine is almost impossible. It is sad when a sub or ship goes down specially standing at the dock...but at least they will be able to salvage the sub and find the cause.
