FischerTal Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 As I notice the pattas that have been given to us on this South Africa A tour, I wonder how our batsmen would fare on the real Saffa pitches. What are the chinks of different Indian batsmen? Dhawan- plays away from body too much. We saw this in Zimbabwe and also here in on the A tour. Philander will be licking his lips to bowl a good-length that seams out for a catch to the WK. Vijay- Does it have to be said? :phehehe: Kohli- For Kohli, one thing i noticed is that he's troubled by the outswinger a lot. Pujara- the ball that seams from off stump to middle stump on a good length is a big worry for him. If Jarvis can do it, Steyn and Philander will make him their bunny. Please contribute for the other batsmen as well.
vayuu1 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Tendu inswinger Dhawan:always looking to attack Sharma:his tailunt
adi B Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 agree with the op..sometimes i think nohit`s and kohli`s frontfoot gets planted too much accross and the movement is stymied
vvvslaxman Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Good outswinger will trouble even the very best. Important thing is to learn to play with soft hands. Even if you manage to edge you make sure it doesn't get to slips.
vvvslaxman Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Tendu inswinger Dhawan:always looking to attack Sharma: his tailunt Straight ball corrected
vvvslaxman Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I like the way Dhawan plays a bit side on when the ball comes back in. He looks more secure like the Ganguly Part 2. He plays inside the line of the ball.
fineleg Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Yes the SA have given useless flat pattas for a-tour. Its like playing in india where bowlers suffer. Real testmatch pitches, and to lesser extent odi pitches will trouble all indian bats. Bounce from morkel and philander movement will be our undoing. Ofcourse magical spell from steyn sometimes, he is atg for a reason Tendulkar - bowled, and will do "ball kept low" face Dhawan will edge to slips or mostly gully Pujara hopefully will score 50?? Can be tentative till 15 Kohli will edge to keeper. For sure. Yuvi style Msd useless in sa R jadeja even more useless in sa Depends on dhawan, pujara and if kohlu fights, 250+
The Outsider Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Pujara- the ball that seams from off stump to middle stump on a good length is a big worry for him. If Jarvis can do it, Steyn and Philander will make him their bunny. Pujara's is the most easily correctable among the ones listed. He should take a guard like Dravid towards or even outside leg stump. Dravid was still vulnerable to such bowling, but his overall test record indicates the strategy was very successful.

He plays inside the line of the ball. im predicting he will handle steyn well, but philander's seam and morkel's body line approach will be his doom. we have already seen so far that he loves to hook, but he doesnt really assess how high the ball will come up when going for that shot.. IMO he should avoid that shot in test cricket. Pujara is also a concern with the hook shot but he's way more balanced than Dhawan when he plays the hook shot.

But typically, there are two very different kinds of batsmen who benefit from this strategy - the very unorthodox like Sehwag, Martyn, Laxman. Their main need for doing so is that their feet don't move as much as the MCC manual suggests, so they are susceptible to being bowled through the gates. Also their bread and butter scoring shots are on the off side. The other category is like Dravid, Kallis, Pujara who are very straight players, so much so that they end up playing shots to mid wicket which ideally should go towards square leg because of their pronounced front foot movements. Ponting and Tendulkar also have this pronounced front foot movement, but they were relatively quicker to adjust according to the line - but even then both had a large number of bowled and leg before dismissals in the eve of their careers. Taking a leg or outside leg guard ensures that when they will be struck on the pads the ball will be sliding down the leg on more occasions than otherwise.
Cricketics Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Only weakness I could find for tendulkar would be the ball keeping low. I think his ability to bend low has weakened a bit from the past, and hence we have seen him get bowled plenty of times like this [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hl1Xqf09LtY]Sachin Tendulkar bowled by Trent Boult, wicket by Boult - YouTube[/ame] If he can sort this out, I think he will show some good temperament and win India few sessions every test for sure.
Number Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 what about MSD ? you guys dont even count him a batsman on green pitch ? :giggle:
CG Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Our batsman play well when there is true bounce as most are stroke makers. We struggle which are sticky and ball seams like MCG.But also quality of bowling we face on those pitches compared to pop team facing our bowlers accentuates the diff.

To be fair to Dhawan he did that ODIs were u need to maintain scoring rates.Think he wont be as compulsive hooker in tests

Ball is hitting the top of the off stump. Over the last few years he has the habit of squating anytime he gets bowled to suggest ball kept low.
