Brilliant work by the government. 800000 evacuated in Orissa itself keeping casualties to a minimum. And they had rescue workers and disaster management teams ready for work. Kudos to the Navin Patnaik government for the well organized job. Evacuating 800000 people is not a joke.

CNN heading says, "Deaths, destruction as India surveys damage from Cyclone Phailin" Looks like they had a nice story ready about lack of disaster management in third world countries and now don't know where to look Really good job done by the government, seems like a lot has been learnt in 14 years

Cyclone Phailin was overestimated by everyone. It itsn't the severe cyclone that everyone hyped it to be.

Lol, now that India avoided casualties suddenly it's not a severe cyclone? Wind speeds and all other parameters were exactly like Katrina. Cars and houses were flying all around. Only reason disaster was avoided was because of excellent prediction, planning and evacuation. Even now government is claiming they will clear all roads by noon In every which way it met almost all parameters of a super cyclone

In disaster type situations...it's always best to over estimate than under...especially in developing countries with rampant corruption and lack of resources. It is perhaps quite easy to be an arm chair critic sitting comfortably in some western country but on the ground it is quite a different scenario.

Well done NDMA. Whoever conceptualized NDMA, did a tremendous job. In a country of 1.2 billion, every year some natural disaster/disasters (flood, drought, earthquake,cyclone etc) invariably happen some where. The money spent for NDMA is fully worth it.

It was a severe cyclone, not a super cyclone. The 1999 one was super cyclone where wind speed crossed 300 Kph.

Just had a chat with my family back in BBSR. Still no power and heavy rainfall but every things under control. People are still indoors. But no casualties. Kudos to Naveen Patnaik :hatsoff:.

It was not like the 1999 cyclone.Most of trees in our garden and neighborhood are safe just somebroken branches where has in 1999 most fell .I was awake whole night and wind was gusty may be up to 100km/h with heavy rains but nothing like 1999.But great job by govt in causing minimal casualities.
