SLC threatens to send a second-string side to WT20

The contracts standoff between SLC and the Sri Lanka cricketers has escalated to a crisis, after the board issued threats of sending a second-string team to the World Twenty20, because the players maintained their refusal to sign contracts, less than 16 hours before they are due to depart for Bangladesh. Players had rejected the incentive-driven payment scheme offered by the board on Thursday, because that proposal does not satisfy their demand for a percentage cut of the gross sum paid to SLC for global tournaments. The players had initially demanded 20%, but they have now indicated they would be happy with 12%. The board, however, has been unwilling to budge from their proposal. The ICC is expected to pay SLC approximately $8.9 million for the World Twenty20, meaning the figure the players are holding out for this tournament is in the region of $1.07 million. Under SLC's proposal, the team would receive a guaranteed $500,000 for playing in the tournament, plus a further $250,000 for reaching the final, then another $250,000 should they win the tournament. If the team exits the tournament at the semi-final stage or earlier, the discrepancy between the amount offered and the amount the players have demanded is approximately $570,000. Split equally among the 15 members in the squad, this amounts only to about $38,000 per player. However, it is understood the players' objections to the board's proposals are largely driven by principle - the players believe they are due a percentage of the ICC payment, primarily as compensation for the use of their images in promotional material for global tournaments. The players customarily sign a contract with the ICC, sanctioning the use of their images during global tournaments. These contracts stipulate that the players cannot endorse their own corporate sponsors during ICC events, which effectively amounts to a temporary loss of revenue for the players. When SLC had been unwilling to share a percentage of their ICC event fees with the players, Sri Lanka's cricketers had suggested they would be content to play in the tournaments free of charge, as long as they could avoid signing the ICC contract. This, effectively, would mean the players could endorse their products during global tournaments, but undermines the value of the payment the ICC makes to the home board. Sri Lanka's players had received a cut of that ICC event fee from 2003 to 2012, until the board struck that payment from player contracts last year, having also issued the threat of naming a second-string side for an imminent international series. The players' grievances are driven largely by the complaint that they are being made to pay for the board's misuse of finances. The board had landed in a debt of almost $70 million, after they built two new stadia and renovated a third for the 2011 World Cup. Player payment has caused strife at the beginning of every 12-month contracts cycle since then. The present standoff is also believed to have caused conflict within the board. President Jayantha Dharmadasa had been sympathetic to the players' concerns, but was outmuscled in the board room by an opposing faction. The players will meet to discuss their stance this evening.

IPL is better than domestic T20s like Mushtaq Ali because of the pressure players play under, the crowd and the quality of players, but still not up to international level. It does help but still it cannot replace international match experience.

IPL helps in competitiveness and handling pressure, it does not enhance your talent or will make you a big hitter. We lack basic aspects for T20 cricket, power game and effective unorthodox bowlers.

This is what he said in 2012, seems pretty clear and consistent. Mentions while IPL can't be equated to WT20, the players do have enough experience to do well in the tournament. IMO IPL helps players individually but to come together in a tournament as team you need to play as a team often. India hardly play more than 2-3 T20I's a year and every time the team is different.

Because of their upbringing at grass root level which is still very conventional. The reason we are still producing old school batsmen like Rahane, Pujara, and other upcoming batsmen doing well in FC.

India need to play more international t20 cricket. Simple as that In terms of quality International Cricket IPL Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy. What the IPL does is allow India to discover talent. That talent then needs to be tested out in the international arena.
