Today my father is unwell and hasn't followed cricket for several years. I showed him the speech today then gave him a massive hug and we both cried!

Apart from Viv Richards I don't think of them have had as big an impact on their country and on the game of cricket as a whole. And in case of Richards, at that time they didn't have the media and the kind of TV coverage we have now to "market" the retirement as BCCI did for this test series.

This still happens to me right now and it's one of those things which I will cherish all my life. I am one of those lucky kids from India who's parents actually felt sad if I was sitting at home and studying while my friends were playing. They always and still want me to go out and enjoy my game. Off course I am way past my school days when this used to happen, but stilL i play competitive cricket and they are always worried about me and ask me when I am at home and my brother is gone outside to play, they feel worried I am losing interest in cricket or something. The father-son bond for cricket is just amazing. I wish your father good heatlh.

The way Indians feel about sachin and the magnitude of him in India, meant him retiring is something no other has or will match in terms of impact and feeling

I want to repeat repeat what Dareen Sammy said. We might over do things but as Sammy put it perfectly "Indians have shown how to treat their heroes" Even though we still have some Morons like fineleg, after putting such farewell, it's something we should be proud of.

5 months ago, I was saddened/frustrated that Sachin may retire without a fitting farewell(forced to retire or droped) . But now, we can all see the satisfaction on his face even when he got out that he did great for his mom/dad and country. We the fans have touched his hearts with those "SAACHIN SAACHIN!" chant. That is something he will never forget in his life. That speech is one of the best I have seen in any sport? If not I would say it is the best retirement speech in cricketing history. It was a poetic farewell for me and I couldn't be satisfied for him anymore.

He wasn't just some cricketing ATG. He was the hero India needed in the 90s when our infrastructure was really really bad and when our economy wasn't so good. That is why he meant a lot to India. He was like a beacon of hope. Filipinos felt the same way with Pacquiao.

Greatest batsman of the modern era to me(personal opinion). Simply everyone wanted to be like him at a time when India had no heroes in the 80s/90s. He is one of the biggest and if not THE reason why many sports stars in India believe they can represent their country well. You can't have guys like Kohli, Dhoni, Dhawan, Rohit, and others without Sachin. His influence transcended the game. He was HUGE for a country like India who had no hero to look up to other than Gandhi. His biggets legacy is the inspiration and hope he left behind for millions of people in India and maybe worldwide.

Yes some would argue that Ali is not best ever boxer and heavyweight using all kinds of methodolgy. Yet Ali is and always will be called the greatest by the people, same with Sachin! Frankly Sachin v other cricketers is not even a discussion. Its more Sachin v Ali as greatest sportsman ever. Sportsman people who have has such an impact beyond their actual playing on the people.
