Not choosing to take the new ball, strange field placements and struggling overseas with the bat. All this makes him an ordinary captain. He is an excellent one day batsman, great finisher of the game in ODIs, but in Tests, well may be we could get someone better.

I wont question dhoni captaincy he has had his up and downs but is batting is worrying me even hacks like dhawan is working hard to stay in the cease long and improve his batting but dhoni just cannot bat longer patiently in test cricket

I shudder to thing what will happen when he won't be around. Regarding the test team, I don't think that is the case. He obviously has his pluses. His team management is said to be very good. Dhoni can obviously play as just a player if we choose to have a separate captain for tests. Even if he doesn't, finding a decent keeper batsman won't be that tough. We have quite a few. We obviously don't know how a new captain would be. The grass always seems greener on the other side. But , chances are that he might handle pacers better. Perhaps the most important aspect for winning overseas. Needs to be checked out on some smaller series. Not really an emotional issue but a proper fact based decision.

With all the retirement of the Seniors, one can't underestimate the need for some kind of continuity to help us with the transition. Yes, Dhoni with the bat in tests has been a joke for a while, but I would rather carry that baggage than push any of the new guys into captaincy while they are settling down themselves.

Dhoni in odis or tests or t20s will still pick the crappy bowlers. He has no vision for past bowling. He'll overbowl a crappy bowler and underbowl a gem, giving him short spells and no backing. Poor yadav, this was his series to make a statement and what happened? 1 ODI and no tests. Ishant comes in and here u go, wicketless!!

Yes why not... Whose responsibility it is to develop or groom better bowlers? Whose responsibility it is to give chance or demand for better bowlers from selectors? Whose responsibility it is to be known as a leader who grooms and backs talented bowlers? Whose responsibility it is to act above petty bias and personal fondness of certain set of bowlers or those who have contracts with his sports management firm? Instead of keep on blaming bowlers, showing over dependence on "batting only wins the matches on patta wickets", clashing with home ground curator on regular basis to get patta dustbowls which favours T20 natraj pose experimental spinners and line and length trundlers...how about spending some time to short list good fast bowlers and demanding from selectors to give them good exposure in international matches and making efforts to actually back them on field as a captain and not fret, make faces or showing displeasure, to let the new bowlers know "you are not wanted in my group of favourite players"...

Dinesh Karthik for sure....His keeping is o.k not Kamran Akmalesque but not as good as Dhonis who himself is not a world beater when it comes to keeping. Saha is an ordinary batsmen,worse than Dhoni. I saw Tare looking like a fish out of water against Lejund in helpful conditions. People are saying Samson is not ready :dontknow: SO as of now Karthik seems the option

Karthik's problem is his shot selection once he eaches his 30s and 40s. He thinks, negating the new ball is the only job he has in his hands. But thats not the case, he should look forward to score hundreds and not just leave the battle midway thinking his only job is to negate the early swing. He batted beautifully in Cape Town (?) in 2007, he batted beautifully in England in 2007. I see no reason why he can't succeed in testing conditions in NZ. He has a great technique, but he needs to get his temperament right. He is a fabulous player, just needs to get a few chances.

Occasionally he does in domestic cricket. But those innings would be usually a run a ball innings. Number of balls he can survive has a ceiling beyond which he won't last.

He was lucky to be included at a very young age. But he just didn't get better. Way too inconsistent. Hence poor average of 27. He does have talent. I don't deny that. No real glaring weaknesses . But temperamentally he is poor.
