On Tuesday, private forecaster Skymet predicted a sub-normal monsoon in India, courtesy El Nino that’s threatening a widespread devastation globally. Given the fears of an imminent drought, the next government has a tall task ahead of it. In an exclusive discussion on CNBC-TV18, Skymet CEO Jatin Singh, ICRIER Chair Professor (Agriculture) Ashok Gulati, and JP Morgan's Jahangir Aziz put forth their viewpoints on El Nino and its real impact on the economy. The Skymet CEO feels an equitable distribution of rains can be a silver lining in this situation. According to him, there is a 40% chance that rainfall in June-September would be less than average, a 25% chance of a drought and zero percent chance of excess rains. So will scanty rains hit India’s farm production? Professor Gulati sounds hopeful on this aspect. He believes the impact of El Nino need not be source of concern for staples. Its impact on food prices is expected to be minimal as India has sufficient stock of cereals. “So cereal inflation can be ruled out,†he said adding March inflation rose primarily because of higher fruits prices. Most fruits track 30% import duty, if that is brought down, it can be controlled too, suggested professor Gulati. this is not an integration issue' date='urbestfriend is right in that ALMOST everybody who speaks konkani speaks kannada .my best friend is from a brahmin konkani family who came to to bangalore 40 plus years ago and they all speak kannada fluently and kannada is ridiculosly easy to learn too.[/quote'] not really. Konkanis of maharashtra dont speak kannada at all. Konkani as a language does use devnagri script and is the closest to marathi (though it does use the kannada script as well) the konkan is primarily part of maharashtra. However Maha Goa and Karnataka do have konkani populations. It remains to be seen what sort of konkani he is

Konkani people are more in Karnataka than Maha..From wiki: Karnataka 706,397 Goa 602,626 Maharashtra 312,000 Kerala 64,008 Dadra and Nagar Haveli 27,000 Although Goa's state language is Konkani, coastal karantaka has significant Konkani populations and all Konkani's from Karnataka speak Kannada fluently. Thats why it is intriguing that Nilekani cant speak Kannada, considering his father hails from coastal Karnataka.

I would like to get down to some facts and figures from seculars. Rise of hindutva ? Well I guess they were asleep when Advani who in many ways us the architect of hindutva was PM candidate. How many RSS / VHP members in all in India ? For your comfort, you can take it state by state and determine how much support do they have ? How many seats are they getting purely on hindutva and which states. Let us pin down some facts. Otherwise simply because Muslims will be voting for congress and others I would construe it as rise of Islam.

URBF is right - Konkani is majorly spoken in Karnataka and not Mahrashtra. The Maharashtrian Konkani is a gravitation towards Marathi in speech and hence, it is almost Marathi. The two largest Konkani speaking states (unsurprisingly) are Goa and Karnataka (most population comes from Mangalore). Goa uses English to write Konkani, Karnataka uses Kannada and Maharashtrians use Marathi. There's no unique script for Konkani.

Let's do some math, shall we Population of India - % Hindus - Hindus - Active RSS / VHP members - ? Support to RSS / VHP - ? RSS have their base in Nagpur. How much support / presence they have in Maharashtra ? What impact have they had in election ? As opposed to, the RSS hero Advani. What impact did RSS / VHP create for him ? How many more votes is Modi getting than Advani through the right wing supporters ? Lets break it down even further Let's take the biggest Modi impact ? UP . What is RSS presence there ? What has changed since Advani who spoke about grand ram temple ? How many are voting because of hindutva ? What is per Hindu vote to seat impact ? What does opinion poll show about SP govt ? How many riots have taken place in this non hindutva state ?
