According to Shami’s father, himself a club bowler in the 1970s, bowling fast is in Shami’s blood. His elder brother, Haseeb Ahmad, is a pace bowler and his younger brother, Mohammad Kaif, is an Under-19 club pacer. “In our village, we didn’t have great facilities but that hardly discouraged us from bowling fast. saneindian Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 The three biggest overseas ODI series wins since 2000s have been when we have played 2 spinners Natwest Trophy final , we played 2 spinners, Kumble and Bhajji, spinners bowled 27 overs. When we won the CB series we played 2 spinners in both the finals - Bhajji and Chawla. Spinners bowled 22 and 25 overs in each of the finals. When we won the Champions Trophy, we played 2 spinners through the tournament - Jadeja and Ashwin. In the finals, out of 20 overs, 11 were bowled by spinners. Not trying to defend Dhoni but we should be picking our 4 or 5 best bowlers whoever they are rather than looking at having X number of seamers. If Ashwin and Jadeja are among those best bowlers, they should play. IMO they are, what we need is a better 3rd seamer and Aaron should be played as Ishant looks to have expectedly gone back to his bad ways Also, Dhoni perhaps needs to trust his bowler and give the team a chance to bat first

saneindian Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Nothing wrong with the approach. Can't blame him when the RR was already around 10. Not sure how many times Dhoni has won us a match from similar situations (batting with the tail and the team needing 70 off last 7 overs).

Other than that, current rules have forced spinners to bowl defensively rather than going for wickets. If you cannot pick wickets, you cannot contain them. Tthird seamer in Ishant did release the pressure built by BK and Shami in 1st ODI, but lack of wickets from Ashwin and Jadeja also played its role. You want wickets from them in middle overs, not contain. Opposite team will eventually score runs in end overs, if you do not get wickets.

They can do it in India because the can chase anything there but not overseas. The matches which SI said were mostly when we got them out cheaply or got regular wickets to halt their progress and did not let them score as big as 300 whether it was CB series finals or CT matches.

Why cant he just say that he is playing his best available bowlers?
