If he can step up his batting in a big way, he can play at 6 instead of Rohit Sharma in tests in overseas conditions which will help us play another seamer. We will have 4 seamers + 1 spinner combination which will give us the best chance to take 20 wickets. He has to start batting up the order in ODIs and take more responsibility. Then can be tried up the order in tests as well. Otherwise, its tough to expect just 3 of our seamers to take all the wickets especially if the pitch becomes flat. We have seen them bowl poorly in at least one innings where they lose the advantage. So they need backup.

Yes, our catching has to improve but few catches do go down here and there occasionally. NZ have dropped catches as well and so does every other side. The problem is 3 seamers wont be enough to take 20 wickets in England. You need to go with 4 seamers and you need to play a spinner as well because pitch helps spin on 4th and 5th days in England. They could promote Jadeja up the order to 4 or 5 in ODIs to see how he bats when he has time. If he does well, he could be given a chance in tests as well.

He is not test standard and unlikely he will ever become a consistent player in the format. At test level he is not good enough as a batsman, he is never going to make big scores and is a glorified part-timer as a bowler. He is not the solution.

Ashwin doesnt have the control that is needed to be a good test spinner overseas. In Indian conditions he may pick wickets, that's it.

on a pitch where their no 8 batsmen scored a 100 with utmost ease we will pat both our captain and no 8 who just slogged his way for 16 ball 26 or 21 ball 26. If that is what a no 8 batsmen is required to do then we have different expectations from no 8 who is in the team as holding bowler. Ability to stay at the crease for longer period of time is required by no 8 by almost every good team.
