Ganguly, one of India's most successful captains, said had the 50-over World Cup not been just one year away, he would have called for Dhoni's removal from captaincy. "His (Dhoni's) Test captaincy has been obnoxious. But changing captains now will unsettle the team. His place is not in doubt in Test cricket, but Dhoni needs to set the overseas record right," Ganguly said. ALSO SEE Dhoni must take a few risks to win abroad: Dravid "If the World Cup was not less than a year away, I would have agreed that Dhoni needed to be removed as captain," Ganguly told Headlines Today. India suffered their fourth successive Test series defeat abroad after their 0-1 loss to New Zealand in the two-match rubber which concluded yesterday. India have now lost 10 of their last 12 Tests abroad -- the other two were drawn -- a record that included two successive 0-4 whitewashes in England and Australia. Sourav Ganguly says MS Dhoni's Test captaincy 'obnoxious' File photo of India captain MS Dhoni during a training session. (AFP) Dhoni's reputation as India captain has been severely dented and his defensive tactics at crucial junctures first in South Africa and then in New Zealand have drawn flak from experts though he continued to harp on the "positives". Overseas, Dhoni has captained India in 23 Tests, of which they have won five, lost 11 and drawn seven. At home, his record is much better - 21 wins, three defeats and six draws. Another former captain Rahul Dravid agreed with the perception that Dhoni was a defensive captain, saying he needed to take risks if he wanted to win Test matches abroad. "I think he (Dhoni) has got to realise this very quickly, that if he wants to win Test matches abroad, he's got to risk it all. He's got to take that chance that he's going to have to lose some Test matches. The only way you can win abroad is to take a few risks, take a few gambles," Dravid was quoted as saying by Cricinfo. "I think he (Dhoni) doesn't trust his bowling attack as much as I think he should. I saw that even in the Durban Test where he didn't take the new ball till 146 overs. In fact he was forced to take the new ball. He didn't trust his fast bowlers to be able to take wickets," said Dravid. "He kept playing with the older ball because he wanted to control the runs. So I think that is a slightly defensive mindset that he's got into." But Dravid added that Dhoni's leadership in Tests must be assessed after the Test tours of England and Australia that preceded the World Cup Down Under in February-March next year. "I've always seen this year of Indian cricket as these four big overseas tours, which is South Africa, New Zealand, England and Australia, with the World Cup next year in Australia. Let's presume that Dhoni is going to be India's one-day captain and take India into that World Cup. I think he's earned the right to do that. "In Test matches, I always saw these four Test (tours) as Dhoni's opportunity to redeem what has been a pretty poor overseas record for him as captain. He's achieved everything else. He's won one-day tournaments, he's won a World Cup, Champions Trophy, he's taken India to No. 1, he has a great record in India, (he) just hasn't had the results outside of India. "And I think he deserves the right, the chance to play out this year, and assess it at the end of the Australian series. End of that series, we'll really know where Indian cricket stands and where Dhoni stands, both as a player and as a captain," he added.
Number Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Pot calling kettle black. Gangu is not good enough to clean Dhoni's shoes as a captain.
vvvslaxman Posted February 19, 2014 Author Posted February 19, 2014 Pot calling kettle black. Gangu is not good enough to clean Dhoni's shoes as a captain. True. But Ganguly as a fan can call that. We are not captains either we still go after players right :cantstop:

Agree with this. We've lost so many test matches, might as well go all out in the future ones. The result can't get any worse!

putrevus Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 No Indian captain has lost this many tests overseas and Dhoni has converted many wins into draws due to bad captaincy and safety first tactics from him.
GolGappe Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 None of these former cricketers give a rat's ***** about Dhoni but they are scared of taking Srini on.
saneindian Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 True. But Ganguly as a fan can call that. We are not captains either we still go after players right :cantstop: This is an interiew from Feb 2002- Bishen Paaji on Ganguly How do you assess ganguly's captaincy? It's been pathetic. he doesn't have any quality a captain should have. He can't motivate the players, doesn't have much cricketing sense, nor does he lead by example. At the moment, he's one of the weakest links in the team alongwith the wicket-keeper. But he's one of the best in one-dayers... not any more. I think the bowlers world over have sorted him out. and with that bouncer rule in place (for one-dayers) he'll find it mighty difficult. In most cases Ganguly was leading a depleted side — Azharuddin and Jadeja were gone when he first took over, injury to Kumble, a series in Sri Lanka without Tendulkar, youngsters coming in, no settled opening pair. I differ on this. the secret is to excel with whatever resources you have. Even with a full-fledged side Ganguly hasn't set the world on fire. Look at this english side. Hasn't Nasser Hussain fought like a champion with all these youngsters? most of the time he was without Graham Thorpe, Darren Gough etc. Rather than taking an refuge in that, good captains make a virtue out of it. Comparing Ganguly with Hussain is like kahan raja bhoj aur kahan gangu teli. Do social factors like family background, the upbringing, education play a role in making a good captain? Yes, to an extent. but by and large, you are either born with leadership qualities or acquire them with aboveboard honesty. A captain has to be humble, but he is too arrogant. No one wants to associate with him in Lancashire. He can't get alongwith his own players and his wavelength with selectors is obnoxious. :) But he's pushed for youngsters without being parochial. There are several others who have suffered and are suffering because of him. Ganguly comes in with certain fixations and leads the side through them. If someone is in the side as a bowler get him to bowl. You can't make him just fill the numbers. How'd he feel if he's asked to bat at number nine? Then what's the solution? Follow the australians, select the best eleven players and then choose a captain. iI we go by that, Ganguly won't be in the side at all. Even Ganguly-the-batsman is a luxury? Yeah, he needs to sort his technique out. Since, he isn't a natural left-hander, he's facing these problems. then, he plays too much away from his body. Who're the possible candidates to take over? At the moment it has to be Sachin Tendulkar. When sachin was first made captain he didn't get the complete support of the likes of Mohammed Azharuddin. In the second stint there was too much pressure on him. He's the best cricket brain we have and we should get him back. Finally, what qualities should an indian captain must possess? He has to be like Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. he was the best, the only one perhaps to have brought togetherness in the side. He'd stress the need to play for the country than be a Punjabi or a Bengali or a Maratha. S. Venkataraghvan was another very good captain that i played under. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/cricket/Ganguly-too-arrogant-to-be-captain-Bedi/articleshow/309962679.cms Obviously Ganguly went onto to lead us to some of our memorable wins after this interview but some of the comments from Bedi sound so similar to what is being said about Dhoni.

Yoda-esque Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Are you trying to say that Dhoni will lead us to memorable Test wins in the future? :cantstop: We are close to getting over the hump. There have been definite improvements in batting. We just need one good bowler. Look at the Aussies. They were losing left and right and they had their share of failures. One change and they are on top now.
saneindian Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Are you trying to say that Dhoni will lead us to memorable Test wins in the future? :cantstop: Naah trying to find the roots of the word obnoxious in our cricket history :winky: The memorable test wins will only come under a new captain not a tired and stubborn captain. :hysterical: yes in India We dont play many series at home in near future, so no chance of that happening either :--D

jf1gp_1 Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 What has test captaincy got to do with ODI WC?
ThePhenomenal1 Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 We are close to getting over the hump. There have been definite improvements in batting. We just need one good bowler. Look at the Aussies. They were losing left and right and they had their share of failures. One change and they are on top now. Just shows that the fast bowlers win you the matches. Its not about subcontinent vs non-subcontinent teams. Pak has done reasonably well overseas because of their bowling. Its in their culture. Bowling needs to be in our culture. We dont groom and manage our bowlers. And yet MSD has the nerve to talk about "man management" as if he does it well. Anyways, a trio of yadav, shami and pandey should do well in tests for now. Dhoni previously asked for a pool of pacers but plays TTFs and old timers. He will never understand fast bowling until the next indian captain hopefully uses them well and wins overseas.
skindia Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 As if dhoni is doing gr8 as odi captain?no chance in world cup,at least do well in tests by changing him.
Midfielder Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Dhoni is no test kaptaan. It is his ego in the way.
