Smith was a much better player overall. Sehwag's record away isnt great - in some lands its out right bad. Smith was the best opener of this generation of players.

sehwag easily for me.maybe i am a bit biased but i just loved viru's batting,would pay to watch his test innings..smith is a dedicated hard working,gritty and an exceptional batsman/leader but viru had the flare,dominated the opposition and created adverse effect on their minds. overall viru for me,u cannot leave a guy like sehwag out for a batsman like smith,thats unfair on sehwag

Smith for me. Viru is a very good player and will walk into an all time Indian test team as an opener.

Both of them had similar careers. Viru was obviously much better to watch but I think Smith was more gritty and if I have to pick just one I'd go with Smith in conditions such as South Africa or England and in places like India Viru without any doubt.

Dont get me wrong, Sehwag is great sure.. one of a kind. Smith is just on a different level.

Depends on where you play. Surprisingly Smith's average in SA is only 41.

Smith had weakness against quality spin and good left arm bowlers, Sehwag against swing. None of them are technically great batsmen. Smith was good chasing a score while Sehwag was setting up a game in brisk rate. They are both second tier greats.

Different kinds of players not ideally suited for comparison. For those claiming Smith got tough runs, he averages only 32 against Australia, the best team of his era. He also struggled in the SC. I would choose Sehwag because Sehwag refined the art of test match batting as an opener. We may see many more Smiths in future, but another Sehwag who averages 50 @ 82 will be very difficult to come by.

In India he has 430 runs in 7 test @ 36 which is nothing special but that's his lowest average in any one particular country. Sehwag on the other hand averages 29 in England, 20 in NZ and 25 in SA. His highs are great but lows are very ordinary. Smith is much more consistent.
