None of the Indian bowlers practiced against the giant seven feet mannequin that was positioned on one of the centre strips at Khan Saheb Osmani Stadium here today specifically for the faster bowlers. The red and black coloured mannequin resembled exactly Ajay Jadeja's stance with a slight backlift when the bowler is on delivery stride. Reportedly, the mannequin made with soft rubber has been imported from Australia (interestingly Dawes' homeland). The idea about using it during training sessions is to help the fast bowlers practise separately on a specific area, such as bowling a bouncer or a yorker or even sticking to a channel outside the off-stump. During the two and half hour training session here this evening, not even for once did the quartet of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Varun Aaron, Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma seemed interested in bowling against the mannequin. This mannequin was first brought during the tour of South Africa and within three months, but it seems the bowling unit has lost interest in this out of the box practice method. The four-man Indian pace attack were more keen on bowling to the batsman at the two adjacent nets at the far end of the ground. While bowling yorkers aiming at toes of the mannequin can be a good exercise, no one cared to explain what a bowler would do if the batsman uses his feet to alter the length. The height of the mannequin being seven feet, a well directed bouncer aimed at it would actually go over a real batsman's head. In soccer, teams used to have these artificial human walls for set-piece movements and direct free-kicks. But increasingly, top soccer coaches of leading clubs have decreased that trend. In the end, one saw the mannequin lying on the ground as some of the batsmen wanted to take throwdowns and hit sixes. Just as it was brought to the ground, it was taken away without being used. Meanwhile, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni didn't bat in the nets, while Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja didn't bowl today.
G_B_ Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 :WTF: this guy is our bowling coach? its out of the box thinking. Come on lord, you would be shouting till you turned blue in the face if Dawes did the same conventional training method.
Lord Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 its out of the box thinking. Come on lord, you would be shouting till you turned blue in the face if Dawes did the same conventional training method. dude doing stupid things isnt out of the box
Pagalpanti Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 dude doing stupid things isnt out of the box How is it stupid.. Malinga perfected his yorkers by just bowling at shoes in nets for years.. Not saying it is going to be a sure-shot success, but at least better than something. Too bad it took him this long to try something out tho
Sidhoni Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 I think some teams do that, I can't recall which ones though.
G_B_ Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 dude doing stupid things isnt out of the box unfortunately India dont have naturally gifted pacers. Its not stupid. I think the mannequin has been used before in Australian domestic cricket. Dont know if it worked out or not. but its certainly not the first time its been used. I get a feeling the Indian pacers are too timid to try new things. Having said that I sort of back them as of today as the WC is no place to start something new.

I am not too sure who is to blame here, is Dawes not too sure of this method of training? if he is confident he should be able to push the bowlers to do what he thinks is right. And why aren't our bowlers doing what is needed of them by the coach? they don't have enough belief in the coach? both are bad signs....

vvvslaxman Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 What should be Ishant's target :hmmm: Should the mannequin resemble Dhoni?

Possibly, the Indian cricketers are such big stars that they don't really need to take 'instructions' from a coach. The coach can tell them something; but they are the ones who decide whether they will do as asked.
Magneto Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 bowling at small target like shoe is different.Even then it took years I just want the coach to tecnical things and correct their actions, not do stuff like this I do think that the Indian cricketers don't care much about their coaches. The work culture is definitely not there, the coaches are not authoritative, they are all tired and the results are for everyone to see.
SLICKR392 Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 While bowling yorkers aiming at toes of the mannequin can be a good exercise, no one cared to explain what a bowler would do if the batsman uses his feet to alter the length. The height of the mannequin being seven feet, a well directed bouncer aimed at it would actually go over a real batsman's head. This is true. Its not out of the box brilliance, but stupid. The line and length idea is good but its better off against a batsman who would look to counter it rather than a dead set idle mannequin. Our bowlers need more coaching on their mental approach, a plan. Their usual plan is bowl few good deliveries and bang in a casual and pathetic short ball. Most of the batsmen can easily anticipate our bowlers. There are no surprises when they try to bowl 6 'this-is-my-ball-of-the-century' deliveries, an apple pie.

Magneto Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 If this is true' date=' changing coaches won't work.[/quote'] We need a coach who will give them danda, but not go to the other extreme. Is their any international guy like that? Steve Waugh?
Midfielder Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 If he is the coach the players need to listen to him.
gazza Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 doesn't seem that stupid, it's meant to help with accuracy, bowling to batsman, certainly the best method of practice can't argue that but if you're training for accuracy and you're getting smashed by the batsman every time then it's not going to help the confidence any and it's going to distract you from the skill that you are specifically trying to train for in the particular practice session. with a drill like this you practice your accuracy without the pressure of the batsman and once you've perfected the accuracy drills on the dummy you can then implement the drills on the batsmen.
rkt.india Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 unfortunately India dont have naturally gifted pacers. Its not stupid. I think the mannequin has been used before in Australian domestic cricket. Aaron bowled just before the Pak game when others other than Pujara and Aaron didn't practice.
fineleg Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Change the mannequin, Indian pacers may warm up to Dawes' mannequin then. Make a life size mannequin from such:
