India vs Pakistan - who really has been the better side over the years?

So we should discard H2H because of one clouded series. I agree that India has the edge due to 2011 WC but you cant disregard H2H because Pakistan has a fantastic record in Ind esp in ODIs. Most of us will not hesitate in admitting that Ind has dominated us in world cup games and would expect sane ICFers acknowledge that Pakistan was the better side in bilateral encounters. You seem like a reasonable poster Utalk and that is very refreshing. I don't think many would disagree that Pakistan over the years have been better against India. But when you take trophies and everything into consideration there is certainly a very good case for India and Pakistani fans should acknowledge that.

Pakistan All-Time Test XI would beat the crap out of India All-Time Test XI reason being Pakistan has produced a great number of 20-25 AVG bowlers while India has produced zilch. And when it comes to batsman Pakistan has equal if not more 50+ AVG batsmen. Thus Pakistan has been the much better over the long run. Pakistan W 118 L 107 India W 121 L 151 India have the worst test record apart from the likes of Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and New Zealand. Weird to even compare them with Pakistan.

Are you sure? Pakistan yet to produce a 10K run scorer in test cricket which is a shame and India has plenty. Even SL has 2 batsman with more than 10 thousand runs though they started playing cricket way later than Pakistan. So In terms of batting India will easily surpass Pakistan. Pakistan and India has produced 2 best contemporary all rounders in cricket history - Dev and Khan. So nothing much to choose between the two. In seam bowling Pak beat India handsdown but in spin India historically is much better than Pakistan. So no chance boss.:finger:

That includes "India" from 1932-1947. Remove that and India's ratio becomes better. Furthermore, India have a better W/L ratio against Australia and South Africa; and in Australia and South Africa. India have also won 3 series in West Indies, Pakistan have not managed to win a single one. Pakistan have been better against England and New Zealand though. A series wise W/L ratio would be fairer than a W/L ratio actually. Pakistan have a better W/L ratio than India in tests in West Indies; but of what use is it when they have not managed to win a single test series there? India with their inferior W/L ratio in WI have won 3 test series. I know what I'd rather have. Besides, this discussion was never about tests alone. India are miles ahead of Pakistan and their bare trophy cabinet if limited overs trophies are factored.

That includes India's record pre-47. If u include that, add that to Pakistan too.

Both India and Pakistan are mediocre cricket teams. They should be aiming to compete compete with the best (Australia) instead of their mediocre neighbor.

Err no. Our Alltime XI has far, far greater batting depth to counter your better pace bowlers.

Agree with your post; with the amount of talent at their disposal India and Pakistan should have done better than they have. Wouldn't call either mediocre though - they have 3 out of 10 WCs played between them (while that may not seem like much, Australia aside, that's as many as the rest of the sides put together). Your first part is interesting. While people like Dhyan Chand are about as Pakistani or British as Tendulkar is, it is a thought provoking argument. I like the fact that you are being consistent at least in your views :) I have seen some Pak fans (some only, there are a number of sensible fans everywhere) who refuse to count those 3 Gold Medals as they came pre 1947 but happily take India's test record from 1932. The thing is, this "Indian" record includes people like Abdul Kardar who was Pakistan's first test captain. Can we then claim Mohammad Nissar and say we have produced a great/very good genuine fast bowler? Anyway, the basic point is - as you say - both India's and Pakistan's test records are mediocre. If you exclude Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, both have lost more than they have won. Comparison between the two is inevitable though - they are arch rivals and there is so much history between the two that comparisons will pop up. India with their WC and other trophy wins have pulled away in the LOIs. In tests Pakistan still edge it but the gap has considerably closed over the last decade or so. I would say that now it is close enough for it to swing in India's favour if India somehow win a series in Australia (long shot but possible). If you look at how the respective test teams have progressed India have recovered after their 0-8 overseas thrashing and have sacked deadwood and consequently competed against SA and NZ away from home. If the bowling clicks you wouldn't bet against them pushing England in England. The Pakistani test side on the other hand, has been in terrible form. Much has been made of India's last series win away being against West Indies 2 years back but Pakistan's last series win away (excluding Zimbabwe and Bangladesh) came well before that. In fact, Pakistan have not won a single test series anywhere since January 2012. If it continues in this manner India will overtake Pakistan soon. If W/L ratio is the be all and end all in tests, that will be taken care of too. In LOIs, there is only one winner though...until Pakistan win at least a couple of major tournaments it is not even worth a discussion for now.

What's do you mean share? British India which included pakistan won 3 medals. it's a fact. What's sharing got to do with it?

All this whining and trolling is immaterial. India whopped pakistan in w20. We are in the semifinal with a chance to win the world cup and you got knocked out in the rounds.

No, I don't believe in sharing records. I believe in eliminating. So that way India's and Pakistan's W/L,Olympics etc starts from 1947. The 3 gold medals and the test record from 1932-1947 belongs to some other non-existent country, that of British India.

Overall yes. But right now we are one of the best (All formats included). The only team to be in top 3 in all rankings.
