Just two balls earlier, Kohli had lambasted Ashok Dinda, who was earlier fielding in that position, for having let a ball go past him. The RCB skipper replaced Dinda in the covers, as if he wanted to show his fast bowler how it was done, only to be left writhing in pain. Firstly, you wondered what Dinda was doing at extra-cover in the first place as early as in the fifth over. And then about Kohli blowing his top in the glare of the IPL flashlights and chastising his teammate for a not-so-big mistake. In RCB’s next match, it was umpire Billy Bowden’s turn to face Kohli’s wrath after a dubious lbw decision. That is before he spent the rest of Bangalore’s innings sulking in the dug-out. Kohli has won admirers around the world for his aggression and passion on the field. But not when he directs it against his own players and officials. Having gotten used to seeing MS Dhoni forever in control of proceedings and his emotions, for close to a decade now, this is not what you want to see in the heir apparent. The other Indian captains in the fray haven’t inspired much confidence either during IPL7. After KKR’s Super Over defeat to Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday, another Delhi player displaying a lack of grace. Gautam Gambhir, at one point tipped to be Dhoni’s successor, abruptly walked away during the post-match interview with Pommie Mbangwa still mid-sentence. That after Gambhir had spent the dying moments of the match, clutching his face and exuding the kind of nervous energy that a captain wouldn’t want to rub off on the rest of the team. Then you have Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, both of whom have come across as reluctant IPL captains. With Sharma, it’s difficult to see how much of a say he even has with team decisions, considering the plethora of cricketing behemoths ‘mentoring’ the Mumbai Indians. And Dhawan has not looked at ease holding the reins at Sunrisers, especially in his handling of Dale Steyn, often letting the likes of Darren Sammy take tough calls. This is not to say that Kohli and Dhawan will not go on to lift the IPL title in a month’s time. They just might. Gambhir and Sharma already have done it in the past. But they will still remain a few paces off Dhoni, especially when it comes to how they carry the weight of captaincy.

Temujin Khaghan Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Ashwin and Pujara will make good leaders... but Pujara is yet to earn a ODI spot (soon god willing) and Ashwin will not be in the starting 11 in the overseas test team... but ashwin can do smthg about his bowling in test games overseas... he is serious leadership material imo

He does have over all awareness about the where the game is going. He can be a good captain. May be better than Dhoni with onfield strategies. May not be a good leader.

May not be a good leader. i like the way you put it. yes leaders are different from captains. so far we only had 3 leaders of varying intensities - Pataudi (Rebel), Ganguly (Hero) and Dhoni (Dictator) Leaders come only once a while... whereas anyone can be a captain. Kohli is adequate for ODI and limited over format. But i seriously want to see Pujara/Ashwin as test captains.

There are lots of successful captain who have worn their emotions on their sleeves and inspired others. And since when is IPL captaincy the benchmark? If it were, Dhoni would easily be the best captain in the world and we wouldn't be languishing at no 5 in tests under him

Tbh both Dhawan and Sharma have been far better than Kohli in these regards. Every player worth their salt (except Munaf Patel & Nehra) is disappointed when they make a mistake on field, but Kohli tries to make sure its evident to the player and that he has noticed this mistake. Every time. What surprises me is the double standards, say any of the foreign players make an error Kohli is quite calm about it. But the moment an Indian youngster does the same the Kohli emotional display goes into overdrive. The other thing was when the teams batting was faltering I thought Kohli would stick to the crease for the whole innings and target a respectable score. But in both situations he faltered. Kohli is a match winner and our best batsman, a very vital cog in the Indian set up, but far far from being a controlled operator when it comes to captaincy duties. The sad fact is the most comfortable captains at the moment in IPL are 2 Australians!!

Perfect, calm and composed, yet aggressive and emotional when required, defensive captaincy when needed and and aggressive captaincy when needed. An excellent all-rounder in the making. Can play according to the pitch, and has certainly improved his all round game in all formats. He is a true all-rounder, not a bits and pieces player.
