The BCCI selection committee's decision to exclude fast bowler Umesh Yadav from the Test squad to England is baffling, especially since six seamers form part of a massive 18-member squad. It is hard to believe that, on current form, Umesh is not among the best pace bowlers in the country. Perhaps, the selectors sacrificed Umesh at the altar of an unwritten appeasement policy, given the kind of polite noise that the Rajasthan swing bowler Pankaj Singh made during the domestic season in an interview to ESPNcricinfo that was sandwiched between his 39 Ranji Trophy wickets and six scalps in the Irani Trophy game against Karnataka. The fact that he has not played any competitive cricket in the past few weeks and is unlikely to get any exposure before the tour of England can be a bit of a concern, unless the selectors believe Pankaj is unlikely to get the tour selectors' nod ahead of Varun Aaron and Ishwar Pandey, not to speak of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami. What makes one suspect that an unwritten appeasement policy is in place? If hard work and performance in domestic cricket are all that the selectors considered, how would they explain the fact that Himachal Pradesh's Rishi Dhawan does not figure even in the ODI squad? Is the BCCI bending backwards to show that there is no discrimination against Rajasthan players? If indeed the selectors were serious about giving Pankaj's career a boost, they would have included him in the Indian team that will play three ODIs in Bangladesh. It would have given him a good opportunity to shake off any rust due to the absence of competitive cricket from his recent routine. There really has to be a better explanation for the selectors continuing to overlook Umesh. Of course, there were times when he has had fitness issues but to think that as one of the few Indian bowlers who can consistently clock at 140km, his last Test match was back in November 2012 is quite intriguing. Offspinner Harbhajan Singh is another bowler who can consider himself unlucky to have missed securing the nod of the selectors at a time when he is bowling really well. It did appear as if incumbent offspinner R Ashwin's form and confidence took such a beating that the tour selectors picked Ravindra Jadeja as the sole specialist spinner in each of India's last three Tests. Given that the five Tests in England are in the second half of the season in Old Blighty, it may have made more sense to pick a third spinner in the tour party. It could well have been Harbhajan - or, if the selectors preferred variety, they could have chosen legspinner Amit Mishra. Gautam Gambhir's return is a tacit admission of the selectors that they erred in not picking a third opener on the Test tours of South Africa and New Zealand. Those who watched him from close quarters in the past first-class season were unconvinced that he is the answer to India's opening issues. But he can draw on his experience and yet emerge as a key factor. But more than anything else, Umesh's exclusion from the Test squad remains a mystery that may never be resolved just like the search for bowlers who will take 20 wickets in an overseas Test and help India post a win. It is not a bad time to recall that India have lost 10 and not won a single Test in 14 starts on foreign soil since June 2011.

Thinking about it for a bit, Umesh was picked ahead of Aaron which I think is not a terrible decision though Umesh is a much better option in tests because he can swing the ball and also gets reverse swing. Aaron only has pace. They have already selected 6 pacers already - B Kumar, Shami, Ishwar, Ishant, Pankaj, Aaron. One more will be overkill. They wanted one all rounder and Binny was picked ahead of Dhawan and I think Binny got in because of his performance in Ranji trophy which helped Karnataka win the tournament. Gambhir was selected as reserve opener because of his experience in county cricket and no other opener in India has experience in foreign conditions.

Pankaj singh,Pandey have not even played a test and u want them ahead of yadav who has a good test record.

He should be there in Aarons place, and Aaron called up later for ODIs if need be (and gone to Bang.) Ishwar has been in recent squads and it is consistent that he is in this one. Pankaj will probably get a tour game at the most and is there more as insurance I guess after the injury problems last time and having to call up unfit RPS. Anyway he definitely deserves a test squad call up after his recent record. I didnt even expect him to make the A team let alone test squad

that's not the point... this practise of picking hacks like binny,jp yadav,bangar shows strategic incompetence on part of the selectors.these kind of mistakes are repeatedly made and continue to be made. players like that belong to the zim or bang team. the only guys who are serious allrounders in india are jadeja and irfan.full stop.others have no hope in hell.

To put in perspective, Jadeja and/or Ashwin can play in a 5 man attack, or Saha can play as a specialist batsman if it came to it- either way will work better than playing Binny

lets hope a-tour to aus will be a turning point for umesh's career. who knows, that tour could be much better for him than warming bench in eng. umesh is not going to be there in first 11 for atleast first 2 tests. if the first 2 tests goes well for india (which is not impossible considering eng is without kp, trot and swan), uy may not play the full series even if he is in tour team.
