Two teenage girls have been found dead, hanging from a tree in a northern Indian village after they were gang-raped by five men, police said on Thursday. A post-mortem report indicated that the cousins from the low-caste Dalit community, aged 14 and 15, hanged themselves late on Tuesday after the attack in a village in the Budaun district of Uttar Pradesh state. "The report suggests ante-mortem hanging, which means the girls probably committed suicide. But we will take into account all aspects before coming to a conclusion," Atul Saxena, Budaun's police chief, told the AFP news agency. Police have arrested four people, including two police officers, the AP news agency reported. The two Dalit girls were found hanging from a tree on Wednesday night in their village after they went missing the night before, according to Saxena. He said the arrests were made after villagers blocked the main highway near Katra village to protest against alleged police apathy and inaction. Senior Uttar Pradesh government officials ordered the arrests. Saxena said that the head of Katra's police station had been suspended for not acting immediately when the girls' family complained they were missing. The National Commission for Women, a women's rights group that operates throughout the country, has reportedly sent a team to investigate the incident, according to local media. India tightened its anti-rape laws last year after nationwide protests over a crime considered rampant in the country. Records show a rape is committed every 22 minutes across the country of 1.2 billion people, though activists say that number is low because many victims are reluctant to come forward.
The arrests were only made after a protest

I am shocked at how llittle press this has got. With the IPL and Change in govt...I guess it is a bad time to be gang raped and hung. Not interesting enough for the national press. There is nothing more shameful for a nation.

Check this out BHOPAL: A 14-year-old girl was raped over and over again for three months by a man in Morena district. Furthermore the man was helped by his wife in the act, said police on Thursday. Her parents came to know about the incident after the girl got pregnant. When they questioned her about her rapidly bulging stomach, she narrated the whole ordeal. She was taken to a hospital where doctors confirmed that she was three-months pregnant. The couple, Pappu Kawadia, 50, and his wife Ameena, 45, was booked under sections of rape and Prevention of Children against Sexual Offences Act. The incident took place at Ganeshpura Mohalla in Morena town. Three months ago Pappu lured the girl to his house on the pretext of offering her sweets. While he took the girl to his bedroom, his wife locked the doors from inside, said police. He raped the girl and threatened her of dire consequences if the matter was disclosed. Pappu has raped her several times since then, said police. The girl's parents have consulted doctors for terminating the pregnancy resulting from rape. This is the second incident of rape reported from Morena wherein the husband was assisted by his wife. The previous case was reported in October last year, in which a 30-year-old woman helped her husband and his friend rape another woman for two days. The survivor was kept confined in the room on the premises until she managed to escape. The incident took place at a temple in Sabalgarh area.

When you think things cannot get any worse, you hear about horrific incidents like this. Just what will be done in India to stop this being so widespread and common. These stories are so common that it's beginning to become normal news and that's the most shocking thing about it. It shouldn't be happening at all, instead we here similar stories almost every other day.

The incident mentioned in the OP was in Bhopal. Not sure how President's rule in UP will stop that. It is not just a UP problem. Until swift arrests are made and swift, dire punishments (e.g., castration) given, these sad incidents will not stop. Especially sad is the apathy and, at times, collusion of policemen.

Not just UP problem agree but criminals and police have become very bold after dickhead utterances by Mulayam like, "Boys make mistakes of raping"... There's a law and order breakdown in the state. Also there's an undercurrent of backlash by Yadav community in particular and Upper casts in general after the recent election results...

Indian girls found hanging after gang-rape We still don't accept it but it's in our "culture" to think that men are superior to women and this is taught to kids at a very early age. There are cases of domestic violence and rape all over the world but things are much worse in India because of our "culture".

Thats the big problem with SP once in power the Yadavs act as though they own the place. Yet the people of UP keep voting them in. I got to be honest. I dont like the congress but even congress rule will be better than SP
