Dhoni is a slightly different case. He does have an aggressive streak as captain and it stands him in good stead in the shorter forms of the game. However, that trait seems to desert him in a Test series played away from his beloved home turf. Dhoni's failings could be caused by a combination of things. Firstly, the short forms of the game virtually dictate how you should play, whereas in Test cricket, the captain has to establish a pattern and then attempt to impose his will on the opposition. Secondly, a captain can stay in the job too long. This leads to him becoming stale and adopting a more conservative approach. It's going to be hard for India to beat Australia away from home. They don't possess the fast bowlers who are crucial to winning on bouncy pitches and there's a question mark over their batting under those conditions. India may not win under another captain - most likely Virat Kohli - but they have no chance under Dhoni. On the last tour of Australia, India went downhill fast under his leadership and unless the injection of youth has an inspirational effect, I don't see Dhoni reversing that trend.

Dhoni as a captain is mentally shot and on autopilot, he works when conditions and form (of other players) are on his side, but when India forced out of comfort zone it is all downhill. But we will be stuck in this autopilot mode until end of WC 2015.

Dhoni's captaincy, while fielding, is basically dependant on drying up runs, preferably by defensive spinners and also by defensive pacers. Many wicket taking bowlers , like Ashwin and Bhuvi, have become run controlling tools under him. Wicket taking, but relatively expensive pacers, like Umesh Yadav, has no place in his scheme of things. This approach works wonders in sub continent ODIs ans T20 matches. Dhoni, the captain, is an absolute beast in those situations. Even in subcontinent tests, this approach works. In overseas tests, this approach is suicidal and a recipe for sure failure. And is being proved time and again. But neither Dhoni nor the BCCI would understand.

His captaincy in NZ was very good. He generally set very attacking fields and searched for the wicket, and made some timely bowling changes. It was the selections that were the problem. Also, Had he decided to stand 2 metres further up to the stumps when Ishant was bowling at 115KPH India might have won a test.

Yeah go for it. Anyone who picks the best team possible for the matches and picks it on merit. Basically anyone who is not corrupt, who is riddled with other agendas. The only agenda needed from indian captain is the agenda to win matches for India

Ian Chappell is not particularly intelligent. Clarke is not all that aggressive of a captain. Making a generous declaration in the vain hope that you might win a test match in an already lost series (i.e. Aus in England 2013) doesn't make you an aggressive captain - it just means that you were desperate enough to try a cheeky declaration. There's really very little difference in the "aggressiveness" of captains around the world. Even Brendon McCullum - deemed to be the most aggressive of captains - isn't going to risk a test series with a cute declaration.
