Vijay --- Mr Consistent

Hello .... Atlast we found an opener in test cricket ..... ever since i was watching cricket(now I am 32) , india was always deprived of successful Test openers ....Most of them were good in sub-continent conditions but failed miserably in seaming conditions .... only one who was different was Sehwag and he was successful experiment from ganguly .... But this guy is just amazing ..... I can't see him failing in the near future because of the below mentioned reasons 1) Superb patience ( on par with rahul dravid in this aspect) 2) Exactly know, where his off-stump is ---- so can leave balls all day 3) Can take a hit on body and gives a **** about it

Really awesome batting. But we need another one alongside him to be an opener. Dhawan is getting good starts but isn't able to convert them into big one's.

There was a point in time when Gambhir had an amazing run, ain't it? We all thought this is it. The perfect foil to Sehwag who was our second best ever Test opener. Cook had a brilliant run, ain't it? Graeme Smith did, ain't it? Sustainability over years and years is very tough. Lets hope VJ can do it, though its a tough one to be consistent over years as an opener like Gavaskar.

That's exactly why i said..."near future" and moreover gambhir was never successful outside sub-continent .... Can u mention one series (only test matches) where he had a consistent run??

^ hmmm' date=' Didnt Gambhir play an amazing knock of concentration in New Zealand test match?[/quote'] gambhir form went down partly due to numerous injuries he suffered in IPL otherwise he was world beater

Gambhir destroyed his own game. It wasn't injury, it was his ODI success. Gambhir has never been a solid cutter of the ball, so he compensated for it by using the dab to third man as his go-to shot for wide fullish balls. This is a low risk ODI shot because so long as its not a fine nick, it will go to the non-existing vacant slip cordon if its a mishit and if its not, it will run away to third man for a garanteed single atleast. For a while he became good at this shot but unfortunately this shot over the long term is detrimental to your game because it requires you to cover the line of your stumps and reach over and if you are looking to play the dab, it interferes with your positioning to leave the ball. This is what destroyed Gambhir. In tests, the dab does not work- its a high risk shot because any and all mishits will be slip catching practice, especially overseas where there will be three slips to start. And since it interferes with the ability to leave the ball well, in swinging conditions it became a nightmare for Gambhir. All of a sudden it was all catching practice to the slips or getting out not knowing where his off stump is. It went on for too long because he got too long a rope in tests and he kept on succeeding in ODIs but this one shot, which it seems like a favorite shot of his, is the reason Gambhir will never be a solid test batsman again.

Gotta hand it to Vijay though. Very rarely you see such a talented batsman score lots of runs. Then come IPL, and he loses everything. And still he makes an amazing comeback. You have found a fan in me. And you left :csk: also so that's even better.

BTW ... just wondering who has worked with Vijay to make him what he is right now ..... I would like the same coach to work with rohit as well ... and may be Jadeja

Star of the tour alongside Bhuvi so far so well done to him but knowing the way things go on this site, he is 2-3 failures away from being dubbed lazy, idiot, stupid and not fit to be a test opener.
