Austin 3:!6 Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 MS Dhoni is one of the worst test captain I have seen going by his performances in last 3 years. The errors he is doing on the field, team selections, field settings seems like a school boy leading the team with no knowledge of test cricket. Alternatively he is a damn successful skipper in ODI's. Under his leadership, India has won many world titles which no other Indian skipper have ever achieved. I am quiet astonished how can a skipper be so different in two seperate formats of the game. Obviously test and ODI's are different ball game but they are both cricket played with bat and ball. You would expect a top limited over skipper to be atleast decent in tests and vice versa. So much difference in a leadership quality cross formats in bizzare and unheard off. This is a serious mystery for me.

He has very little idea of bowlers, bowling , field placements etc. especially when it pertains to attacking the batsmen and taking wickets. At heart, he likes his bowlers to dry up runs. He either ends up using attacking bowlers defensively or, on the occasions when he has decided to attack the opposition batsmen, he is neither comfortable, nor does he know what to do exactly. He picks wrong bowlers and gives them wrong fields. ODI is mainly about batting and defensive bowling. So, he succeeds. Test match is mainly about attacking the opposition batsmen and taking 20 wickets. So he fails. Thing to be noted is...the ODIs which are about getting the opposition out relatively cheaply, like the ODIs in SAF, Dhoni failed.
jf1gp_1 Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 our strength is batting, ODIs and t20 are batsmen game ; under dhoni one thing we have become real good at is that we can out bat any team hence the success. Test cricket is bowlers game you need 20 wickets, we havent produced a world class spinner since kumble, we havent been able to replace zaheer. Unlike most i for one dont believe Dhoni is keeping aaron or yadav out of team because he hates keeping against express bowler or some silly reason like that. However playing xi is captains call and whatever cricketing logic he uses he just doesnt want to gamble with 5 bowlers infact this series he hasnt even opted for 4 specialist bowlers and that is the fundamental problem. Weak bowling leads to experimentation on field leads to him looking silly and us losing game.

They either defend scores and get 20 wickets or they get 20 wickets and set up low scores for batsmen to chase and win. Dhoni doesnt understand bowlers. Knows nothing about pace and how it can get wickets. Knows nothing about SR and who is best suited, i.e. yadav. He doesnt know how to rotate, tires bowlers and adds batsmen which burdens the bowling.

undisputed chap Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 A captain is only good as his bowlers. In the past we had kapil , srinath , kumble , zak. etc who made their captains look good. But now we have pisshant :facepalm: who is taking his own sweet time to mature along with crappy spinners. Also dhobi is no genius in this format. In odis we look good when our spinners come into play but yeah we are mediocre in every other circumstance.

I think we are one of the worst teams when it comes to bowling in PP's

If we can have a bowling attack which consists of Umesh, Varun, Bhuvi Shami Ahmed , jaddu/ Ashwin, we can get 20 wickets without much sweat. Bowlers win you test matches and batsmen win Odis and t 20s. You can't expect 3.5 bowlers to get 20 wickets. I know dhobi is a stubborn mule who keeps repeating and thinking of " process" instead of winning at any cost, but inshallah we hope someone bowls a beamer at him and knock his block of so that we can get Kohli as a captain who I thought was brilliant in handling bowlers in Asia cup.

Not to an extent which wins you 3 world titles in 6 years, so definitely he doing something very right there. Surprised that he is not even able to rub 10% of the ODI skiils in his test leadership.
nevada Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Dhoni takes decisions based largely on gut feel and instinct. In the longer version of the game, this is a low percentage strategy. Even in ODIs his poor decisions are sometimes masked by the batsmen's brilliance.
adi B Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Dhoni is actually a defensive,laidback captain.in odis it works for him even though we have a poor record in eng,saf,aus under him but the game style is different.his thinking process works and fits in for the shorter format but in long format u can't be defensive most of the game and expect to win matches.the longer formats tests ur skills in rotating the bowlers,field placements/plans for particular batsmen,ability to marshal the troops but his altitude and body language plain sucks in test matches.It's like a deer caught in the lights
adi B Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 We have lost 3 of 4 odis against England in England,lost 3 of 4 odis against aus in aus,2 of 3 odis against saf in saf,4 of 5 odis against nzl in nzl in our last away tours to these countries so that's a grand total of 12 losses and just 1 win in 15 of these odis.thats pretty poor tbh. Only lungans have done well in these countries in their last few tours amongst the teams from SC
