Dhoni's away batting average in the last 3 years

Since Jan 2011, 25 with 0 100s. Even at best he can score a 50 and not big 100s. And there are people saying there cannot be a better wicket keeper batsman than him. Is it possible that we cannot have one wicket keeper bat in the entire country who can average more than 5 away and keep better than Dhoni?

I mean makes me wonder, if he is only as good as Jadeja away from home. His overall average is around 38.5. That makes it roughly around 51 at home. Wow. Looks like this guy is only half the batsman away than he is at home. Such a shame and looks like cat on hot tin roof.

Test cricket needs technique baba! (even the maniacal Sehwag had his technique, albeit an unconventional one, he was a supreme timer of the ball along with reflexes) These dhonis jadejas binnys are all Paul-Valthatys-of-Test-Cricket. Even Ashwin and Bhuvi have better batting technique than Dhoni/Jadeja. THIS testing is why Test Cricket >>> odis.

Just ran a quick cricinfo stats : Average of Top Indian wicketkeepers in tests held inAus, NZ, SA, Eng, WI. Kiran More- 28.07 Nayan Mongia- 20.23 Syed Kirmani-24.81 Farokh Engineer- 32.67 Naren Tamhane-23.33 Chandrakant Pandit-14.2 Sadanand Vishwanath-did not play against any of above. MS Dhoni-29.13 So Dhoni not bad as batsman really and his average in england is 35.Only bettered by Farook Engineer as keeper-batsman in Aus, Eng, WI, SA, NZ.

Yeah that sounds about right. I wont say poor. Definitely better than Mongia, More etc outside India.I think Dhoni is definitely alright as wicketkeeper - batsman batting wise, compared to earlier keepers we had.

Statistically no matter how you put it, Dhoni will turn out to be one of the top WK batsmen in the world. If I am not wrong, Sanga when was a WK batsman averaged 26 outside SC. See these are stats. Matt Prior averages around 39-40 odd while Dhoni averages 38 odd. Anyone who has seen them play would say Matt Prior is ATLEAST TWICE the test batsman. Younis Khan averages 31 in ODIS (7000 runs, 75 SR) and Jayawardene averages 32 (11K runs 78 SR). Younis Khan is considered as one of the most hopeless ODI batsman by Pak fans leave alone the rest of the world while Jaya is considered one of the best in the world in ODIS (not ATG but still a very very good batsman). You see, this is the issue with stats. They don't present context. They don't present MATCH DEFINING innings. They don't present the fight a player gives. For example, Zaheer Khan's best Test knock was 0 (20 odd balls) in the third test 2001 against Aus which enabled us to win the match and a historic series. Stats would say it was a useless knock (he even got out) but the value of it for those who saw it would be more than even a 100 on a flat track. In that knock, he played out the balls allowed batsman on the other end to score. So point is that if you want to analyze stuff, the best way to do it is by stats + visual appearance. And in that aspect, Dhoni flops and flops big time. When you see Dhoni play, you would know that if the going gets tough, he is HARDLY going to step up. He may have some good knocks but many a times when you need him to stay and play a gritty knock in a tough situation, he would be the first one to get out.

Yup ,45 odd at home and 32 away(including SC). His record is abysmal in aus,windies where he avgs sub 25,32 odd in saf and England IIRC which is decent enough

Also like to point out i would look the other way if Dhoni was a fantastic captain and a good keeper. He is neither.

Name me a single wicket keeper batsman from India who averaged 35 in tests. Dhoni averages 38 including some match winning innings like the double century at Chennai. He hasn't been that consistent overseas but generally that's the case for many proper SC batsmen. Its hardly surprising for a wk batsman.

Yes Dhoni has been the best for now. But the question asked by fans today is not about whether he has or he has not been the best. Its about WHETHER he can hold a spot on his own NOW if his Test captaincy is stripped. The answer is we don't know. Its not a sure shot case. Things have changed. Gilly heralded an era where WKs were expected to bat well. Dhoni did it for India. Obviously, he is the best Test wk batsman we had. But now, the situation has changed. We have guys coming up the ranks (Saha and a few others are developing in domestic circuit) who can average 30-40 odd playing proper knocks when needed. Its not about averages. Its about impact of innings as averages don't perfectly reveal how good or bad a player is. For eg - Siddle (good bowler) averages less than Anderson but isn't half the bowler Anderson is. Ideally Dhoni must fight for his spot. If he fights a proper battle and holds his spot, then so be it. No one can complain. Of course, all this won't happen. But just saying for argument sake.
