He is one of the most obsessed about numbers kind guy and there were stories about him back 10 years ago that Saurav knows exactly what the target is from how many balls at any given moment, what a teammate's average (or his own) is in the current tournament, etc etc. So obviously, when numbers man sees his numbers making him the 4th of the 'fearsome foursome' of Indian batting lineup, he does have a tendency to shore himself up a bit. OTOH, I don't think how much of a 'against the odds success' Dada has had, gets appreciated by many. Had he been an Aussie or English, he would be a bigger darling than Alan border or Graham Gooch for having balls of steel and determination to move a mountain. dada has a right to be pompous, in a sense that he is one of the very very few successful indain cricketers who went against the odds, against the grain. When Saurav came back in 96 in England, everyone was saying its nepotism coz his dad was a selector or something. That he will fail. Then he scored a century on debut. Everyone said fluke. Then he scored another high 80-something innings if memory doesnt fail me. Then they said he was too flawed and too slow for ODIs and went on to do better than Tendulkar for a few years in the late 90s and scored tons faster than anyone else ( rate, not speed of tons). Then Indian team blew up with the matchfixing fiasco, Tendulkar didnt want captaincy and they thrust it on dada. Again, everyone expected him to fail- but bang, he wins the most awesome series vs the Aussies ever and the ultimate underdog eviscerating the alpha dog ever. Successful Indian cricketers tend to come with a certain hype around them- Tendy, Dravid, Laxman, Kumble, Sehwag, Azharuddin- they all came with the 'next big thing' tag and lived up to it to various degrees. Ganguly came with a 'no good for anything' tag and he's had to earn his batting spots, earn his praise as captain and so tends to be more defensive that way.

Yup I agree.But its more dada the captain who gets the praise some well deserved.As a test batsman he does have many gritty knocks particularly near the end of his career and some gems in between like karachi,brisbane but he always was decent test batsman.
