Runs will come if you start taking wickets. If you are up against huge scores even the most inform batsmen can struggle. Your batting is bad.. what is the point is in adding another hack to the line up. If they go with 6 batsmen once again it will be a lose lose situation once again. You will be playing for draw from first day. KNowing this England will run all over India.

Actually its the other way round. When you have more options (all capable), rotation is more easier. Even if you screw up in one session, no big deal as the 5th bowler would help your other bowlers remain fresh. But with 4 bowlers, if you screw up rotation (which is very very easy to do if the opposition doesn't get out fast), your day is gone.

Gambhir/Dhawan are not the main problems here. i expect our openers to see off the new ball at best. didn't expect much. No.3, no.4 are the ones who are hurting us badly as they were expected to produce bulk of runs.

I remember many times dhoni couldn't rotate them like the last test vs England in India probably in Nagpur and in England again binny gets under bowled.

Yeah Dhoni is rubbish either way but pointing out that with 5 bowlers, you have more liberty to mess up.

Retaining Rohit at any cost will be death knell for India. Pujara will make less than 20 runs if he opens. He already opened in tests and was not successful. This foolish attempt at making Pujara open ( like Dravid) again to retain Rohit will be a disaster and wrong tactic again. Rohit is not the solution to the problem, but he is the problem.

Kohli and Puju are established Test players now with centuries in SAF and NZ (for Kohli). OTOH Nohit is still young at the Test level.

That's what pure stats would tell you. What it won't tell you is Dhawan has looked hopeless while Pujara got starts and then threw it away. Kohli got out early in a couple of innings too but did look good when he got starts.

Pujara is realistically an opener in this series so far. We have dhawan failing consistently and it's pujara who has taken over dhawan's role in playing the new ball and the 3rd batsman to accumulate runs. Last time Pujara and Vijay opened they made a huge partnership if i m not wrong. Also Pujara is someone who never puts pressure on his partners, so it's worth a try.
