Precambrian Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Averages just 33 as a specialist batsman with a S/R of 78. In last three years, it's been worse (averages just 30 from 69 ODIs) with just 1 hundred. Why is he in the team? How the hell has he played 400+ ODIs with such a record? He hasn't had one exceptional year in his career (averaging over 47) with the bat. In fact he has averaged above 40 only in 5 calendar years out his 17 yr long career. Hasn't got any sort of exceptional record in the world cups. Incredible!
fineleg Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 but he is tailunt and elegant. More importantly, we need to realize - if we give very long rope to R.Sharma and/or HHackudu we will have our own version of Jaywoddina 33 with sr in 70s. Hope BCCI prevents that.
Old guy Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Just see his performances in big games and you will know .
Texan Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 They don't have any better batsmen. Had he been playing for India, I don't think he would have played even half that number of matches.
aceofbase Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 We have Viru and Yuvraj who are way ahead of him in average and strike rate and not able to make it to the squad..I think this is one of the reasons SL have not won anything substantial since the 96 cup...Even sanga's average was lower in the mid to higher 30s ...he picked it up in the last 2-3 years..
bowl_out Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Hasn't got any sort of exceptional record in the world cups. Incredible! He did get a 100 in the WC final in 2011. Wasn't match winning though, still got them to a competitive 274 after a horrid start of 30 odd after 10 overs.
BeautifulGame Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 The options are Kandamby Chandimal Thiramane and so Not hard to see why

Precambrian Posted November 9, 2014 Author Posted November 9, 2014 Ayyo, aapu vechittaya.. just checked the scorecard. :--D
kumar713 Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Ayyo' date=' aapu vechittaya.. just checked the scorecard. :--D[/quote'] :haha::haha:
JaFanatic Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Even this century couldn help his avg thats how good a player he's been!
aceofbase Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 he acheived 12000 runs in his 425 matches while virat scored his 6000 runs in 136, less than one third of the matches..
Crookbond Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Ayyo' date=' aapu vechittaya.. just checked the scorecard. :--D[/quote'] Well, it's actually a good thing. SL has lost both 2 times when Jaywardene has scored a century against India in an ODI. Before this, there was the 2011 WC final.
nevada Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 He did get a 100 in the WC final in 2011. Wasn't match winning though' date=' still got them to a competitive 274 after a horrid start of 30 odd after 10 overs.[/quote'] And he also got a hundred in the 2007 WC semi final against NZ. I think he is in the team not just for his batting but for his leadership skills also.
Haarkarjeetgaye Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Its a tiny island country with not many class players around

In the WC final, Jayawardene got a 100, and Dhoni played a match winning 91 off 79 balls to get India to victory... Today Shikar Dhawan gets the exact same 91 off 79 to get India to victory... Coincidental? :--D :icflove:
sticky wicket Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Mahela been good ODI player for SL, he is like what is Ian Bell to Eng or Younis Khan to Pakistan In the overall scheme of things these guys would never make it into India ODI team But they are regulars for their nations
