fineleg
^ It is not over-rated. One needs both. As an opener - if his technique is weak, Aus will exploit it. Dhawan lacks in both. Vijay lacks in one of it. Link to comment
rkt.india
Vijay doesnt have a bad technique, plays close to the body, comes behind the line of the ball, leaves well unlike Dhawan who plays inside the line like Sehwag, but he finds it more difficult because he is left hander. Link to comment
shortbread
Tour Games: 51n.o & 60n.o 1st Test: 53 & 99 That said he's very unsettled when he nears a landmark, something we saw in England as well. Had he calmly reached his 100 and continued this would have been a different story. Also the next few games are far greater challenges. His stability at the top is vital for India. Link to comment
ThePhenomenal1
he deserves better than dhawan. go ahead, find my old posts where i backed dhawan to the bone but now iv had enough. He takes 3-4 innings to get in the groove, no way man. KL Rahul come forward please or get rohit to open. Both rohit and dhawan have failed almost everywhere. Link to comment
vvvslaxman
He puts a prize on his wicket.. Hope others learn it. Also he has better surviving technique than some of the guys like Dhawan/ Rohit Sharma. Link to comment

shortbread
Vijay 3 Critics 0 Not even half way through yet. He started promisingly in England and then tapered of. This had a huge impact on India's batting, once Vijay fell cheaply the top order were exposed to the new ball and then the collapse ensued. Vijay continuing his good form is vital if Indian batting has to make a positive impact in Australia. The Aussies will conjure up something! Link to comment
Cricket_Hacker
Good to see him positive. Was overly defensive in England Link to comment
shortbread
Good to see him positive. Was overly defensive in England The Duke moves in England, so stroke play isn't conducive especially against the likes of Anderson and Broad. And the Duke doesn't age as quickly as the Kookaburra. If any opener can see of the new ball in England without losing a wicket that's a job well done. Link to comment
Gollum
Has been stellar in this tour. One big problem for India solved. After Gavaskar we have a good opening batsman for all conditions. Link to comment

Gollum
Very unselfish of him to go for the runs rather than his 100. Top bloke, gem of a player. Most runs in a series by Indian openers in Australia 482 M Vijay in 2014/15 464 V Sehwag in 2003/04 450 S Gavaskar in 1977/78 Link to comment

shortbread
But the primary reason has to be the stability Vijay has bought to the side as an opener. His ability to anchor the innings and create a foundation has helped batsmen who follow, especially compared to the hapless openers we had in the previous tour!! So the big question is how he will fare in Australia?!....... So a lot hangs on Vijay's shoulders, we'll see what happens! Tour Games: 51n.o & 60n.o 1st Test: 53 & 99 That said he's very unsettled when he nears a landmark, something we saw in England as well. Had he calmly reached his 100 and continued this would have been a different story. 2nd Test: 144 & 27 Fixed his nervous 90s problem with a brilliant 144 at the Gabba. That innings gave India a brilliant start which they threw away. 3rd Test: 68 & 11 4th Test: 0 & 80 Boy, has he delivered or what?!! He's been a solid opener for India especially in very challenging conditions abroad. His skill at seeing of the new ball and tiring the bowlers is exceptional. With the solidity he brings at the top, along with Kohli and Rahane followed up with a much stronger batting tail in Ashwin and BK, India has a very good Test batting line up. Especially if the other stars start really delivering as well. Link to comment
