Gollum Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 Never since Gavaskar have we had an Indian opener who put such a big prize on his wicket overseas. Sehwag on his day was devastating but those days came very few and far adrift in Aus, NZ, Eng and RSA. Gambhir except for a couple of good knocks in NZ and RSA was a catastrophic failure outside flat phattas and the way he played in England was nauseating. Here comes Mooli, the guy everyone thought was in the team only because of CSK/TNCA politics. Since the home series against Aussies what a turnaround he's had. Except for the NZ series he has been the shining light who has made the job easier for our middle order and that too with no support from the other opener. Whenever he has played well India has at least had a great batting innings, even if he goes missing he plays out many balls thus taking the shine of the new ball and making the opposition fast bowlers tired. His main problem is that he usually goes missing on flat tracks and hence isn't able to boost his average, a man of his temperament should be averaging above 50 and an average of 50 for an opener is ATG stuff. The future of our test team, esp overseas lies squarely on his shoulders because he has the toughest job in our team. If he maintains his run we can have a great few years competing toe to toe with the likes of Aus, Eng, RSA because finally after 30 years we have someone to shield the fabulous middle order from the new ball and rampant pacers which can subsequently pile on the misery once a platform has been set. So more strength to this gritty awesome under rated man Mooli and may he have an uninterrupted run of minimum 5 years in our test team. Hopefully others like Dhawan, Rohit take inspiration from their fellow player and fight it out instead of meekly surrendering.

He always had the ability and right temperament for test cricket, then his stint in CSK ruined him, his technique went wobbly, became impatient, fitness levels dropped and lost confidence in the longer format. I think he had a really long think about his test future at some point and his priorities(read in an interview) and he along with his childhood coach started mending the cracks in his game. Now he is a different layer and the one India needs desperately.

Yes, nice to watch Good Ol' Fashioned conservative batting Test cricket :two_thumbs_up: Dravid used to be the watchful patient one. MV cannot equal 50% of RD, but still doing what he can.

I guess it must be pretty difficult for these guys to play three formats which call for different approach to batting.

Wow, spoil his technique as if it is apple or orange waiting to be spoiled. He's been playing and perfecting his style of play over the last few years despite stupid criticisms like yours and now he has really come to party. Batsman doesn't do well in tests - stupid IPL had destroyed his technique. Batsman does well in tests - stupid IPL will destroy his technique. Can't win.
Precambrian Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 Playing T 20 has made him confident to go and play his strokes and not just stay in one gear which was his biggest issue. He always had the temperament but IPL exposure and strengthening of his technique has resulted in him being able to stay quiet for long periods and accelerating when needed. Today's batting post tea was jotting short of glorious. He played a lot of so called 'test shots' but also essayed adventurous shots more seen in T20.

It was a tough day, but Vijay needs to build more stamina. But exceptional batting no doubt. But there are issues........ The test team has become over reliant on Vijay's opening score and his ability to beat a new ball to death. But what happens if he gets out cheap?!
