The former India captain has been following the Indian side in Australia quite closely, and soon after India's hammering on the first two days in the third Test at Melbourne, Ganguly said he felt that MS Dhoni has been struggling for a while as the Indian captain and that he is running out of time. Ganguly, who has been an expert commentator in the ongoing Test series between India and Australia, termed Dhoni's record as an ODI captain has been exceptional but said the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman has been struggling for some time as the skipper at the five-day format.

"It's not just these two matches, it's for a while now (that Dhoni has struggled). He just has not really got the team going at Test match level. That's up to the selectors but he has had a lot of time as captain, close to 60 Test matches. I think he has had a lot of time. I think Dhoni is a good captain. The record he has in one-day cricket, he is a good captain. But in Test conditions overseas, it has just fallen away a bit. This series is not over yet so maybe we can talk differently at the end of this series. Hopefully, he can reinvent himself and find a way to lead this team forward," he added.
Ganguly spoke highly of combative vice-captain Virat Kohli, whom he termed as the "future" of Indian cricket.
"I think he (Kohli) is the future. He will be captain of India. You need positivity. You need positive captains. MS will captain at the World Cup, then we'll have to see what happens after that," the former left-handed batsman said. "I like his (Kohli's) passion. You've got to have passion. It should mean something to you, any job you do. I like him, I like what I see," he was quoted as saying in Daily Telegraph.
Dhoni, 33, has played 90 Tests, and Ganguly said that he should continue to play on under Kohli if a captaincy change was decided upon.
"Absolutely. When Sachin finished as Test captain, he played under me. When I finished as Test captain, I played under Dravid. Dravid played under MS. Ricky Ponting played under Michael Clarke. I do not think that's a problem. As you long as you keep performing, captaincy is just one role. Your major role should be to contribute to the team," he said.

is he really running out of time? India basically have 2 years of home test series coming up. If he weathers the storm post the Aussie test series he may just hang on. Dhoni the player in India is different from Dhoni the player outside india

That is what I fear. Dhoni has done nothing to justify captaincy in the next two years of home tests. If anything, he should be dropped altogether and a new captain should be groomed. ALSO, Saha as a wk is way better than Dhoni. Dhoni adds nothing to the test team. Its only because of his corporate contracts, Srini mama and some delusional fans like Sidhoni that he is still around .

Dhoni in India has a solid record. Nobody can dispute that. India will be a weaker team without him in India. The question before India is do you axe MSD in preparing for the overseas tours to come?

Do you seriously believe India will do bad at home without Dhoni? Why? There have been series with Dhoni injured and India has done as good if not better. What is your basis for saying this? He is a stellar player at home, but is he irreplaceable and others hopeless at home? I don't think so

India won't miss msd much even at home.his batting might be missed but even many many domestic keepers can also perform well at home with the bat

The worst thing that could happen to India is Dhoni retaining the captaincy for a major part of the next 2 years and then a new Captain being appointed right before the away tours.That would be a disaster.I hope Dhoni steps aside right after the WC.

What I fear the most is that if India performs decent enough in the world cup, the fools in India would again lap up to Dhoni and then with the home tests coming up after that he would retain captaincy. It would be the perfect time for a new captain but we all know who runs cricket in India. :((

He has no shame and no accountability. He would cling on to it as long as the $$$$ are flowing.

I thought the discussion was about test cricket. I don't think anyone here is underestimating his worth in one day cricket.
Read again the quote of MTC I was replying to. "There have been series with Dhoni injured and India has done as good if not better." There is not a single test series that Virat has captained in India so obviously he was referring to ODI's, No? MSD is irreplaceable as ODI captain and player (Globally) and Wk Batsman in Home tests. Agree he needs to go as a test captain though and probably as a player.
