Dravid was right about shelf life and Dhoni's shelf life expired early in 2012 as far as test cricket is concerned. In fact the selectors could also see it but he was retained as captain by Srini. Dhoni clung on to it for nearly 3 more years through horrendous results. That was the problem.

IPL was more important to MSD than Test cricket. People in ICF have been thro' those moments when Test cricket was treated as "who cares about it". It was very apparent he didnt care much for Tests. Temporary memory loss for goose and he has gone sentimental.

If Dhoni retired form all form of cricket story should have been different. Here he is retiring from a format of game, when team doing badly as expected , when his captaincy skills are severely criticized obviously there will be negative comments. For example if he retired during 4-0 whitewash of OZ in India reactions should have been different.
