Dhoni does not need to step down he actually needs to step-up and bat at no.4.

 

If we ever need Dhoni as captain, it is now where Kohli is in the form of his life and already has big Test match assignments lined up for near future and he should only need toworry about batting in ODI's and nothing else.

For me, it depends on the development of a wk batsman (may be Pant),  bowling allrounder in Hardik and finally Virat's workload across all formats

No.4 is the only place that Dhoni can contribute now. He does not have the game to bat down the order anymore. His reflexes are not the same. He will only kill the momentum if he comes down the order.
