Kalia_Test Posted January 20, 2015 Author Posted January 20, 2015 Why though? Dhoni is a different batsman all together in odis. Sending someone before him means using less of the class of Dhoni. Dhoni has his own weird uniquestyle of play where he keeps rotating strikes and keeps the run rate up. We actually should utilize him as early as possible too.ta We need to forget Dhoni's swashbuckling hitting for a while and remind ourselves how many times he has dug us out from a poor situation in odi's where we were reduced to low score early in the innings and he stood hard on the wicket to combat the pressure and eventually play it out till the end Again, the whole idea should be to have Kohli-Raina-Dhoni bat most of the overs. This is how I look into this. I personally don't want anyone to disturb that combination. It is for me the best combination of any batting line up in the whole world for a 50 over forat right now. My $0.02. These are different pitches though. Let us assume a hypothetical line up as below SET1 : Rohit Dhawan Kohli Rahane SET2 Raina Dhoni Binny Jadeja SET3 Ashwin Ishant Shami Now, in an ideal scenario, - SET1 needs to bat 200 balls ( one batsman facing 100 balls and other 3 100 together - get about 180 odd. They are capable and that has always been their role - SET 2 needs to bat 100 balls and get 100-120.They are capable and that has always been their role ( Binny is new though) - SET 3 - Ideally should not bat :giggle: but can jump into SET1 or SET2 depending on how wickets fall

If he comes in to play at over 30 then he will play at 50 strike rate till over 40-42 and then will attack after that. He is that kind of batsman over the years.. He'll save his wicket till the end and then unleash the hell. Dhoni, being captain, wouldnt promote himself at no.5 unless we are chasing and there is a specific need like WC 2011 final..

You will see some odd games where openers are playing out and kohli, Raina, Dhoni all failing, which is of course not a bad problem to have that someone from top has taken responsibility as the wickets keep going down.
Kalia_Test Posted January 20, 2015 Author Posted January 20, 2015 And that is totally fine. You will see some odd games where openers are playing out and kohli' date=' Raina, Dhoni all failing, which is of course not a bad problem to have that someone from top has taken responsibility as the wickets keep going down.[/quote'] Yeah. And just to clarify, in the SETs that I posted, it does not assume that no one from SET2 will come in before 200 balls ( of course they might and someone from SET1 will bat beyond 200 balls ) - The point is what to expect from the category of players. Somehow, I never liked the idea of Dhoni or Raina trying to survive/bat out overs. That is not their game. Their game is to terrorize opposition bowlers with their strokeplay and that will be possible only when a reasonably good foundation is laid by others and opposition is forced to look at defense also
putrevus Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 That was an ATG team but this team would also do well in India Remember Yousuf Pathan almost winning the match on his own in SA just before world cup. This team even in India will be still depending on Kohli, Dhawan and Nohit to put up big scores with Dhobi and Raina doing finishing roles. What is the identity of this team, this team is very much like 1992 team which was awful. 2007 team failed because of an upset and stupid format but it sure had strong batting, this team is filled with bits and pieces in Ashwin, Jadeja , Binny and Axar and players like Rahane and Rayudu who at best can be below average odi players.
vijay50 Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Get Naman Ojha/ Uthappam/ good old Sehwag in place of Dhawan, along with Yuvi . Problem solved. Also play Yadav/ Shami and not both. Ishant should replace one of them for WC. If Bhuvi is unable to pick early wickets then they can play Yadav, Shami and Ishant or Mohit/Other guy, Shami, Ishant.
jusarrived Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Rohit - Dont like him , I think he sucks the momentum out , but we dont have many batsmen who bat well in the first innings . Dhawan - Need a batsmen who can give is quick starts , dont have a choice but to take risk with him , Rahane has been huge dissapointment . I would rather have a batsmen get out early and let others rebuild an innings than some one how gives away a good start in every match . Virat - Has to bat at No 3 Rayudu - We dont have any one else & he should be ok playing in the middle overs not wasting any PP & plays spin well as well . Raina - Floater Dhoni - Last hope Binny - Better hitter than Jadeja Ashwin/ Jadeja - not sure between these two. Shami Ishant Yadav Thats my 11
NareshK Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Rohit Dhawan Rayudu Kohli Raina Dhoni Binny/Jadeja Ashwin Bhuvi/Ishant Axar Shami This is the best combination from the resources we have. Rayudu can play the anchor role well. I dont expect him to take the seamers to cleaners but that shouldnt be his role either. Need a batsman who can steady the ship and hold one end up till 35th over. I dont mind Rayudu playing at 4 and Kohli at 3. Dhawan should be given the rest of the series to get some confidence back and figure out the best way to play in these conditions. If he clicks at the top of the order, he will score runs quickly and it will be a big bonus. If he doesnt, Rahane can take his place as one of the openers. Unless pitch really helps spinners, Binny should be selected over Jaddu. Both are decent lower order bats. Axar has done decently in these two ODIs by keeping the run rate down which is not easy for a spinner in these conditions. He deserves a place in the side for the rest of the tri series and WC as well.
Kalia_Test Posted January 20, 2015 Author Posted January 20, 2015 Dhawan/Rohit/Rahane will be the villains and they know it too. They face the best opposition bowlers at their freshest and pitch at its spiciest. There will be ducks and single digit scores. And this won't be just India. I don't believe any of Raina/Kohli/Dhoni,etc would have dealt with the peaches that openers get in Aus any better than Rohit/Dhawan/Rahane
Bigg Brother Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Having seen the 3 matches so far in Aus, a few things are clear - These are not 350 or even 300 score pitches. 280-290 is usually a winning score. - As acknowledged by Dhoni, lack of hitters at the back end is confusing people like Dhoni and Raina - Our top order batsmen are trying to go for outrageous shots ( even today Rahane, Raina and Kohli got out trying unnecessary/outrageous shots. - Given nature of pitches, you will get peaches like what Dhawan got - We are struggling to bat out 50 overs. I believe that if India bats 50 overs, we will get 270 - 300 but how? I think we need a change in strategy and this can be arrived by working backwards. Who are our hitters - Raina, Dhoni, Binny and Jadeja. These 4 batters should NOT come before 35th over. All 4 of them together will need to face 90-100 balls at max ( as they WILL NOT survive more than that ). The target should be 100 runs from them. Again, working backwards - it means that Rohit, Dhawan,Rahane and Kohli need to bat 35 overs for 170-180 runs i.e RR of ~ 5> No need of any extravagant shots, etc. I would even think of sending Bhuvi/Ashwin ( if they are in 11 ) ahead of our hitters before over 35 as they are not capable of big hits but can be useful if they are asked to just try take singles. In short, use resources wisely knowing what is the strength of each player. Thoughts? Only way for it was inclusion of Vijay. He can surely play out first 10-15 overs.

You are choosing Dhawan over Rahane?? are you serious? have you looked at Dhawan's overseas failures?? Simply horrible... If anything there will be a choice between Rayudu and Dhawan.. When Rohit comes back it will be Rohit Rahane Rayudu Kohli Raina Dhoni

I don't believe any of Raina/Kohli/Dhoni,etc would have dealt with the peaches that openers get in Aus any better than Rohit/Dhawan/Rahane today they were showing highlights of CB series we won where tendulkar scored twice in finals in 2nd game we were off to slow start just like today but instead of trying to go at 6 rpo they kept batting properly and got good score and i think it just shows in experience of rahane otherwise he can easily play though 50 overs ..

NareshK Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Only way for it was inclusion of Vijay. He can surely play out first 10-15 overs. Playing out 10-15 overs is not the issue. In ODIs, you cant leave too many deliveries. Especially in Australia, there will be bit more pace and bounce and bowlers will look to bowl short and back of length. You need to have good backfoot play and have to play the horizontal bat shots well. Murali Vijay doesnt play any scoring shots when the ball is pitched short. Not sure he will be successful there. In any case, today's pitch had a bit of juice in it and batsmen were also going for shots more than they usually would. It looked like they were trying different things than trying to seriously win the game. I wouldnt look too much into it as far as our prospects for WC are concerned.
Old guy Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 He always tries to overattack. Can play quick enough just by playing normal cricketing shots. yes ..his role should be to bat through and looked comfortable today until he started slogging

I think the same about Rohit but in Australia, he is the perfect guy to open.. His innings in 1st game was the perfect template of an anchor.. everyone else should have been attacking around him.. Dhawan has been given enough chances.. Rahane is much better if he can control his agression a little bit and premeditated shots. Dhawan may work against Lanka, Pakis, WIndies, the teams that dont have accurate fast bowlers... However, against, Aus/Eng/NZ/SA, he is a sitting duck.. below 20 score guaranteed..

Why open when you cant deal with 1-2 good overs from pace bowlers . Raina , Virat & Dhoni are our best bat , irrespective of where you make them bat .

Rahane tried to over attack after first two overs and Kohli did the same with word go.. They were playing in 20/20 mode instead of 50 overs.. Both played and got out with pre meditated shots.. This may be cuz they dont know what the target should be at this ground.. I bet if we were chasing the target, we would have seen different approach from both of them.. they should know that 4 RPO in first 10 overs is ok as long as you are playing sensibly and saving wickets..

Raina , Virat & Dhoni are our best bat , irrespective of where you make them bat . Why claim to be finisher like Dhoni and Raina when you can't even bat out 50 overs batting first? What is their excuse? Jumping out to a part time spinner and getting stumped/bowled looked a lot more stupid than getting out caught to a peach of a delivery. Works both ways. Make Dhoni and Raina open and they will average <20. Each position needs their specialists and everyone will fail sometimes ( especially in overseas/bowler friendly conditions)
