Even in a more bowler friendly age, what did our legendary spinners average in Aus,Eng, SA and WI - the difficult places? Kumble - 35 Bhajji - 37 Venkat - 44 Shastri - 44 Prasanna - 40 Bedi - 33 Chandra - 32 Mankad - 45 Gupte - 31 Only a couple of Indian spinners have created constant impact bowling outside the SC. And those were in a more bowling friendly age where teams used to make 240 in a test day. Like Kumble says, there is no way to become a good spinner in these conditions without lots of exposure - Kumble himself needed an entire decade to polish his skills for these conditions, as his 35+ average testifies. Even our spin legends like Bedi, Chandra etc have gone nearly wicketless many times early in their career, even after bowling 40 overs in an innings. India need to build a strong pace team and use a single spinner as good backup for these conditions. With more exposure, the spinners will churn out some match winning performances under suitable conditions. Expecting sub 35 average outside the SC for a spinner in the modern batting friendly age is a bit too much, considering the historical data.
