At 23 years of age he has already notched up ten international centuries, the 4th most in the history of the game before turning 24. The three above him include: Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Sir Donald Bradman, a remarkable achievement indeed. The importance of Shehzad to the Pakistan team cannot be understated. 9/10 of his centuries have come in a winning cause, which shows his match winning capabilities. He brings a certain solidity to the brittle Pakistani top order and has made the opening position his own. He is currently the only Pakistani batsman to feature in all three formats. Since his comeback in 2013, Shehzad has been Pakistans leading run scorer in ODI cricket with 1649 runs at an average of 38. The platform he lays at the top of the order is crucial for the likes of Afridi and co to come in and blast. “I’ve noticed in the past 1/2 years, whenever I or someone from the top order scores close to a hundred, it makes it easier for the lower order to come in and play wellâ€. When Shehzad scores a ton, often Afridi & Umar Akmal do well: Shehzad 115. Umar Akmal 32(run out). Afridi 24. Shehzad 102. Umar Akmal 42. Afridi 11. Shehzad 124. Umar Akmal DNB. Afridi 30* Shehzad 103. Umar Akmal 14*. Afridi 59. Shehzad 113. Umar Akmal 0(run out). Afridi 55. Shehzads success however is not limited to the one format. During the 2014 t20 World Cup, he became the only man from Pakistan to score a t20 century after his 111* from 62 deliveries stunned the Bangladeshis at Dhaka. A year prior to this he was inches close to reaching the milestone with a brutal 98* at Harare against Zimbabwe. Eight test matches have brought Shehzad 3 centuries at an average close to 50. So far he has scored a century against all opposition he has faced: Sri Lanka, New Zealand & Australia. His ability to convert his starts into meaningful scores is what sets him apart from his peers. Test cricket seems to be his premier format; his first-class average compared to his list-a average is testament to this. What impresses me most about Shehzad is his capacity to score runs against the best bowlers and in tough conditions. At so early in his career he has achieved centuries against: Johnson, Steyn, Malinga, Southee, Boult, Herath, Roach & Shakib, some of the finest bowlers in the modern era. His centuries in South Africa, New Zealand and West Indies demonstrate he is a complete batsman as it shows he can score runs against fast bowling. The biggest test for a batsman from Asia is to score runs away from the sub-continent and it seems to be a test which Shehzad has passed as of now. Its not simply his batting, the amount he brings to the team with his fielding is worthy of a spot alone. Fielding at backward point, he is the most trusted fielder in the Pakistan team. He adds a sense of life into a rather lifeless fielding side. Having such fielders is always comforting to the bowler. He does however have a few issues to work on, mainly his strike rotation. He often gets bogged down in the middle overs however he is young and I believe it is something he can overcome with hard work. Shehzad takes his game very seriously and is one of the hardest workers in the Pakistan team. He was recently named the fittest player in the Pakistan team. The amount he dedicates to practicing in the nets is remarkable. During Pakistan vs Australia Brian Murgatroyd said, “Waqar Younis had to tell Shehzad to stop batting because he practiced for so longâ€. With such a positive attitude to his game, I am sure he will do his best to iron out his weaknesses. The Pakistan media are very critical of Shehzad and it is something that bothers me. We must remember that despite everything, he still has not played a single international game at home, yet the amount of negativity surrounding him is astonishing. I believe he is an easy target to pick on due to his previous history of breaking curfews, and his overall aggressive nature. Yes he does have a few negatives but nobodies perfect, I think we should rather focus on his positives. Let him take all the selfies he wants, I couldn’t care less as long as he is winning matches for Pakistan, and he certainly is as shown through his man of the match ratio. He has 5 man of the match awards in only 63 games, compare this to his captain who 6 man of the match awards in 159 games.

On topic, as much as how inconsistent Shehzad has been recently, he still has been Pakistan's best opener in recent times. Not long ago Pakistan was changing openers like a tooth brush. They have to stick with him and find probably a better partner than Jamshed for him.

I can understand lot of fan following for him in Pakistan. Just like we had fan following for venkatesh Prasad. You've just said the difference between Pakistan and India. Whilst your best bowling talent available was somebody as useless as Prasad, our best batting talent were the likes of Miandad(who I'm sure you as an Indian fan will know about), Zaheer Abbas, Inzi, Anwar, Yousuf & Younis Khan. Our batting is not great but far from being that bad.
