Viv played in a tougher era with more bowler friendly pitches, bigger grounds, better bowlers and lesser bats. Sachin is an ATG but he was never really a match winner considering the number of games he played. In fact Kohli and MSD will go down as bigger match winners once their ODI careers are over. Whats you definition of match winner?

Modern batsman have their share of problems. Not everything is easy peasy. Fielding standards are way higher today than in the 80s and most teams have a fielding coach. Technology has flipped the advantage in favour of the bowling side. Formerly, almost all close decisions went to the batsman - whether they were runouts, LBWs, edge catches etc. Moreover, every team is using technology to pry out your weaknesses and you have to be on the top of your game to outwit your opponents. For example, if the opponents find through technology that 50% of your runs are coming from some particular shots, the bowling side is sure to choke you off runs. Planning in the modern game has a much higher standard compared to the past.
