West Indies treatment of Chanderpaul is an absolute disgrace and should be hogging cricket deadlines everywhere. Listen to Clive Lloyd speak on the matter - it clearly pains him to have this man leading the batting charts. Lara, to his credit has also spoken out.

Chanderpaul's performance in the last 5 matches has not been good and such kind of poor form at the later stages (especially above 38) are terminal. I can understand if people want to give a long serving test player a farewell match. This issue with long serving players not going out on their own terms will remain for as long as sports exist. These players are driven by a desire to be competitive and when you are doing something successfully for so long you will always 'feel' that you can do it one more time and then call it quits. That is human nature. That is why we have selection committee's and in this case I feel that they have taken the right decision. Sachin was a once in a generation person and we can't keep comparing every player to him. Chanders is 40 years old and has not been setting the test match arena on fire of late!!! People on here expect him to get a farewell series against one of the most dominant test match bowling line-ups of recent times?? Imo they have actually saved him from some embarrassment by leaving him out of this series.

It is the WICB's moral duty to ensure the last test he played was his farewell test. The question of should he get one more test to say goodbye should never enter the public domain. If the WICB have just now discovered that his form makes him un-selectable for the next test (despite their own claims he has been in decline for some time) then that is the board's fault. I find it highly improbable that any player at his age, upon being told the next series is your last, would chose not to retire and accept the farewell.

Simmons was also dropped as player and replaced by Chanderpaul. So he also has an axe to grind. Its devastating when you are just 80 runs short of Lara that he is dropped. What about the 4 innings before his last 5 matches where he made 3 50s against Bangla. Karma is a biatch and Chanderpaul as selector will finish Phil Simmon's sons career. Good old racist Lloyd playing dirty tricks as usual to deny Chanderpaul.

While I'd like to see Chanders get one more series, and it will be nice... even legends like Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman didn't get a farewell series (forget relative chotas like Sehwag). and its ok, they didnt call time early enough to get a farewell series. I don't even think it is time for Chanderpaul to retire yet. If he can find some form he should be easily able to last a few more matches. West Indies don't have a stable middle order yet so his presence would be needed. It is good that he gets to take this series off (willingly or not) and then possibly get a chance to come back into the side later. But when the time does come that he is about to retire, he definitely deserves a farewell series of some sort. He has done so much for a team while has been relying on him mainly for the batting over the past few years.

Failures are treated differently for a veteran vs a younger player. A lean run for a veteran builds up massive negative momentum, with each failure bringing up talk of "is this the end?", "should he retire?" etc. To prevent ugly situations it is better that the veteran and his cricket board have a talk about his exit plan in advance. Like "I want to play the next 1 year and based on form and fitness, then take it 1 series at a time. If I have a lean run in 3 consecutive series I will announce retirement on my own", etc. Chanderpaul is going to be 41 soon, it's not like he is a 34-36 year old who has been cruelly cast away. Not saying either party is to blame or blameless here, but it is lack of a clear plan that has led to this sad situation.

The last couple of series haven't been good for Chanderpaul, but before that he was almost invincible. He got many not outs and generally ran out of partners. If a country like Australia, India or South Africa, even say England dropped such a player after his recent lean run, I would understand because these teams have batting talent in the reserves. But West Indies are struggling to put 6 batsmen out in the middle who can get runs with any consistency. So, they should have picked Chanderpaul for one last series.
