BeautifulGame Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Rahane is a good opener but not good enough to dislodge either Rohit or Dhawan Atbest keep him as 3rd choice opener
jusarrived Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 After opening Rohit became a brilliant ODI batsman. However Rahane played as an opener many times before (in 36 innings) but his record in that batting position is still mediocre. So I would not risk putting Rohit at #4 (which may lead to Rohit being ineffective at that position) for a batsman that is mediocre at all batting positions. has Rahane got a consistent Run as an opener ? No Rohit just dosent have the game to survive middle overs , especially without PP's now . His game is limitied which is basically tuk-tuk-slog-tuk which you can get away opening , so you dont have to wonder about him being ineffective at 4 .
bihutoli Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Solid start! Mostly a solid start from these two blokes!
Debutant Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 Failed. Lets hope he plays well in the second innings
The Dark Horse Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 Noone should suffer so that Sir tailunt can excel..
jusarrived Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 How Rahane has a better alround game? Yes' date=' he is technically better but struggles in other departments, cannot rotate the strike, cannot hit big shots.[/quote'] you think Rohit can rotate the strike ?
coffee_rules Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 you think Rohit can rotate the strike ? Yes, but only for the next batsman coming in to bat.
rkt.india Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 you think Rohit can rotate the strike ? where did I say that? Rohit is worst. He is just good for a slogging for few overs. This thread was about ODIs, not tests.
Vijy Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 where did I say that? Rohit is worst. He is just good for a slogging for few overs. This thread was about ODIs' date=' not tests.[/quote'] Nohit and Raina are almost on par though.
The Outsider Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Batting slots in test cricket do not work by supposed specialization at a particular slot as in ODI cricket. It was a travesty that Rahane was battling so low down the order anyway. When a new batsman comes in, he is slotted at numbers 5 or 6 in an established batting lineup like Tendulkar, Dravid, Ponting etc. etc. The match defining run scoring opportunities are usually at 3 and 4, besides opening. It's great that Rahane has moved to number 3. For a batsman of his quality that's where he should bat, given Kohli has 4. The in and out game between the rest of the contenders should be played at 5 and 6 rather than disturbing the crux of the batting.

Regardless of whether such "supposed specialization" exists in Tests or not, it remains quite incontrovertible that certain batsmen perform at their best in certain positions - in No.5, one can think of Chanders, M. Clarke, S. Waugh, etc who have done extremely well and not so well when they batted higher up the order. Batting with the tail is a specialized task, and one that shouldn't be left to rookies unless and until they are part of a strong batting lineup; examples of these would include Indian team of mid 2000s and Aus team of mid 1990s to mid 2000s. This Indian team lacks stability everywhere (except for Vijay and Kohli to an extent) and hence, the real question is: where would Rahane best serve the team - at 3 or at 5? I believe that both scenarios have pros and cons and this conundrum would have been solved if Che Pujara had turned out to be successful in the away tours after SA.

I'll differ on Clarke and Chander because Clarke did bat at 4 once he was the premier batsman and Chander was out there to do some stuff in a degrading cricket environment. In my view, Rahane is the best batsman we have and it makes sense to give him the number 3 slot as in traditionally successful test teams. I have said it as such when he was called hahane and hackaane so no I don't have any desire for him to fail. I believe he is a great batsman and will shine through at any slot (maybe not opening because he is divorced to that mindset for years).
Debutant Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Good to see Rahane take his opportunity  He should make the third position his own now that Pujara is no longer an automatic choice Lets see whats Nohit does in the 5th position

It indicates that he was best suited to play at 5, as per the team's interests since he clearly felt comfortable there. There is no fixed rule that the best batsman of the team should bat at 1-4: Waugh, Clarke and Chanders were the best batsmen of their team for some period and batted at 5. As for Rahane, I'm fine with him playing at No.3 as long as the man himself prefers it and feels comfortable there.
PSB_Zone Posted August 24, 2015 Author Posted August 24, 2015 This was for ODI.And now rahane is making even stronger case for opening. He is a suitable technique for new ball .he likes the ball to come on to bat .he will be perfect foil for dhawan and his job will be to play 50 overs and every one playing around him. India lack fire power in the middle order rohit will give them that.He averages 45 at 5.u can either play him in 4 or 5.raina dhoni and rohit.

He wasted more than 100 ODIs to realize Rohit sucks in the middle .Why would we waste another 50-60 ODIs to realize the same again? Rohit is arguably in top 3 openers in ODI cricket .One of the best Batsmen in world cricket ATM .There is no need to replace him . Rohit sucks badly in test cricket but let's not confuse that with ODIs
India-KXIP fan Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Rahane hit 7 boundaries getting to 100. 3 of those boundaries were reverse sweep, lofting ball over mid off and conventional sweep. Ran very hard. Aggressive shots vs spin, probably Kohli's philosphy had alot to do with that.
