Even if he did not want to play in the subcontinent (there is little evidence supporting that anyway) that doesn't necessarily mean he would have failed if he played in the subcontinent. Fact is that he was very good wherever he played more than 3 test matches and most people who watched him rate him very highly despite not playing a lot in Asia.

The fact is he did chicken out and that is wrong .now imagine a Jayawardene or samaraweera chicken out from a tour Australia or England or say a warner chicken out from a tour SC, They'll have a far better average when they retire (close to 55-60) ,but would they be considered as greats?

Lillee got 95% of his wickets in AUS/NZ/ENG his home like tracks. He was a HTB.

Mcgrath anyday....don't care about guys who had the option to play in SC but did not.....Mcgrath was a legend....He was a test great a ODI great and a bowler for every single condition......Mcgrath might be one of the top 3 fast bowlers of all time,Lillee is not even in the top 10

To answer the question in the thread title, I would have Lillee in an all-time Australian XI but only one of McGrath and Lindwall. The best Australian bowling attack IMO would be McGrath/Lindwall, Lillee, Davidson and Warne.

The pitches in 1970s did not offer much bounce or seam. It wasn't really easy bowling in those countries even if it was his home countries. Lillee also performed very well in the Super Tests against West Indies in West Indies with performances like 5/51 and 7/23 in the 1978-1979 season. So he performed in Australia/England/New Zealand/West Indies and did not play enough matches in the subcontinent to be judged there. The series in Sri Lanka was at the end of his career and at that stage if it was any bowler other than Lillee, he would have not gone on the series in the first place due to the pain - that almost completely invalidates the theory that he purposely sit out tours in the subcontinent. Also in the 1970s and 1980s non-Asian teams toured Asia much less than Asian teams toured non-Asian countries. Asian tours were not very beneficial financially so non-Asian teams did not have a lot of motivation to frequently tour Asia.

Add to the above attack, Miller as all-rounder and there's one devastating attack. But, I'd go even further and choose only one of Lindall/Pidge/Lillee and go with a second spinner on spinning tracks - both O'Reilly and Grimmett are certified greats.

Thomson n Lillee a fearful combo, also from being a fast , terrifying Bowler to a complete Bowler after career threatening injury, this guy was a intelligent guy the way he learned to get fit, adjust, remodel n come back successfully. Lillee was a more complete Bowler n Mgrath was a bowling in the channel and getting bounce because of his height, for pure comparisons Lillee a complete Bowler, he had all the weapons ,while Mgrath had accuracy, and barely moved the ball much, he played for the best teams in any era also umpiring in Australia was not the best , Drs maybe would have meant fewer wkts for Mgrath. I would pick Lillee over Mgrath, anyway!

On a seaming top Mcgrath may win but on flat track or a perfect wicket Lillee still wins my vote.
Lilllee was a green track bully. He struggled in Pakistan and even struggled against minnow Sri Lanka on flat tracks. McGrath for me. Marshall, McGrath, Hadlee, Donald, Waqar all better for me than Lillee

Lillee any day. Mcgrath would have literally cried on the field if he had to bowl to Gavaskar, Boycott or Viv Richards. If Mcgrath had watched Gavaskar's 100 off 94 balls vs West Indies, he would have thought of wearing diapers before bowling to him.
Nah, McGrath is the eprfect bowler to bowl to Viv, because he toys with the egos of the batsmen. Viv had a big ego and wanted to attack bowlers. McGrath on other hand squeezed life out of batsmen. Against Gavaskar or Boycott, I do agree. But Waqar, Wasim or Imran would be better bowlers to get these batsmen out because they bowl jaffas with astonishing frequency.

Lillee played 1 game in SL. Just 1 game. 3 games in Pakistan in which 2 were flat track draws.

As I posted in another thread What did Lille do outside of the bowling friendly wickets of Australia England and New Zealand ? Its a joke when he is rated as among the top 3-4 fast bowlers in world cricket . If Jayawardne had born in Australia or England he would have been hyped as the greatest by these jokers no doubt .Same way how ridiculously M Johnson is hyped up nowadays . Lille has taken 6 wickets outside England Australia and NZL in his entire career . Let alone the chickening out of sub continent he didn't even play against WI in WI. McGrath is a bowler who has dominated all conditions.

When England and/or Australia hyped a player in the past, the hype stood. The heroes of the Ashes inevitably came to be regarded as best of the best. A good example is Botham. Another is Lillee. The claim that Lillee performed well on flat Aussie wickets is a joke. If Lillee had to play 10 test matches in India he would have collapsed.

Lillee was quicker sure and probably better in paceman friendly conditions, BUT as has been pointed out, very much of a HTB and McG has performed in a range of conditions that Lillee could not

If I remember correctly, he was either the fastest (or amongst the fastest) to 1000 runs and 100 wkts. During the early part of his career, he was brilliant with the ball and almost a batsman like avg with the bat. Later, for a large chunk of the career, he was pretty ordinary.

I Personally I rate Lillee ahead by inches and still feel he would trouble great batsman more than Mcgrath with his guile. On a seaming top Mcgrath may win but on flat track or a perfect wicket Lillee still wins my vote.
Really, I would have thunk totally the opposite
