There are some random threads like Amazon opening office in Hyderabad, the Chennai metro thread and few others. It might be useful to track development on Indian cities in one thread. Coming to topic, Smartcity scheme is for 100 cities in India over 5 year period and it is competitive in nature. The master website for all official news is http://smartcities.gov.in/ by the Ministry of Urban Development. From what I remember reading, each state has to get minimum one smartcity and then some criteria on population,etc is used. From my State Telangana - the smartcities shortlisted are Hyderabad and Warangal. I am unable to find names of cities for other states . This concept is interesting as the plan is elaborate ( detailed in the official website ) where 20 cities are prioritized each year and progress evaluated for further release. Each state has to come up with solid proposals and they will be assisted by an independent consultant. I could find 2 proposals on the website Hyderabad - here New Town Kolkata - here ------------------------------------- Mods - I know that this scheme is of the NDA Govt but keeping this in CC section as this can be used to discuss city developments beyond the scheme too ( and also that the implementation is across state Govts and local municipalities ) :two_thumbs_up: ( p.s. The website gives the below :- How Many Smart Cities in Each State/UT? The total number of 100 smart cities have been distributed among the States and UTs on the basis of an equitable criteria. The formula gives equal weightage (50:50) to urban population of the State/UT and the number of statutory towns in the State/UT. Based on this formula, each State/UT will, therefore, have a certain number of potential smart cities, with each State/UT having at least one. This distribution is given below. The number of potential Smart Cities from each State/UT will be capped at the indicated number. (This distribution formula has also been used for allocation of funds under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation - AMRUT). The distribution of smart cities will be reviewed after two years of the implementation of the Mission. Based on an assessment of the performance of States/ULBs in the Challenge, some re-allocation of the remaining potential smart cities among States may be required to be done by MoUD. AMRUT is another program that covers 500 cities and if I check its website amrut.gov.in under coverage ( since smartcity is supposed to use the same criteria as AMRUT ) Five hundred cities will be taken up under AMRUT. The list of cities will be notified at the appropriate time. The category of cities that will be covered in the AMRUT is given below: i. All Cities and Towns with a population of over one lakh with notified Municipalities, including Cantonment Boards (Civilian areas), ii. All Capital Cities/Towns of States/ UTs, not covered in above , iii. All Cities/ Towns classified as Heritage Cities by MoUD under the HRIDAY Scheme, iv. Thirteen Cities and Towns on the stem of the main rivers with a population above 75,000 and less than 1 lakh, and v. Ten Cities from hill states, islands and tourist destinations (not more than one from each State). So heritage cities, towns on the stem of main rivers, hill stations, islands all need to be covered. In any case, I don't think the number of cities in each state matters that much. It is the budget allocated that is important ( 3 lakh crore over 5 years ). I don't think a small town in UP will get as much budget as say Greater Mumbai or Hyderabad ( where the scales of projects are higher ).

Pls remember - Not all 100 are through. http://smartcitieschallenge.in/challenge-overview is pretty clear. So there will be 3 cycles before next elections in each cycle 20-30 cities with best proposals will get the funding with the left out cities eligible to compete next cycle. Since the amounts budgeted for smartcity are huge ( ~ 1 lakh crore each cycle and might increase too ), there will be some serious competition.

Apart from Karur all big cities in central Tamil Nadu belt is getting smart city :nice:

On Bangalore not being part of the list ( though Tumkur 70 Kms away will compensate ), it looks like Bangalore would have pretty little chances of going beyond the first stage given its less than ideal Tax collection record and consistently over estimating budget and under - delivering. Consistent Tax collection record is a very important criteria in smartcity as per what has been published so Karnataka Govt showed its smartness already by not putting Bangalore's name forward :two_thumbs_up: http://bangalore.citizenmatters.in/articles/bbmp-budget-2015-analysis-bangalore The BBMP budget estimates Rs. 6,730 crore of outlays for Bengaluru. Actual receipts have been consistently overestimated by over 100% in each of the last five years. Total receipts have declined consecutively for last four years; decline of 25% since 2011-12 resulting in significantly poor outlays. Maybe localites like Gollum and others can comment - what could be the reason for this non-collection of Property Tax, Stamp duty,etc that accrue to the local Municipal Corporation and how can actuals decrease YoY?

Let's see what happens. 100 new cities may not directly map to smartcity scheme. Look up AMRUT scheme. Maybe 100 new cities are covered there. Also we need to be careful how we interpret NEW city. Surely we should not expect 100 barren lands and start from zero. AMRUT covers 75K - 1 lakh population small towns and develops them to potential 'cities'. You have to start from some minimum base. I might be mistaken but this is my best guess.
