I miss GG & Sehwag

I was just watching through some highlights on Youtube and realised just how good they were. The excitement, the finesse on display. I remember wanting them to play on for the next 5/6 years and hopefully both retire pomp and circumstance. It's sad to see the way the way these two declined and the state of our team right now. There's no way near as much excitement, or eye-candy up top. This is just a nostalgia thread, I guess

And no matter how much someone says it, Dhawan ir not comparable and will never replace Sehwag. He lacks the ruthlessness and brutality, and even if he does well in the future - which I hope - he'll never be equivalent to Viru.

I don't think I would ever call GG eye-candy but his purple patch was pretty amazing. Sehwag on the other hand had so many remarkable knocks; a lot within SC and some crucial ones outside too. I reckon that Vijay will become a fine player, provided a GG-like decline does not follow. Replacing Sehwag is nigh impossible; Dhawan is a pale imitation, who has done well with the limitations and abilities that he does have. In Suryakumar Yadav's first Ranji season, I remember wondering whether he might, in the future, fill the gap left by Sehwag. He proved to be an utter dud of course.

Yep. We were very fortunate to have them. Prior to them we had opener struggles for the longest time. Wasim Jaffer, Vikram Rathore, Dinesh Mongia, Aakash Chopra, Devang Gandhi, S Ramesh, SS Das and god knows who else we tried. Not to mention poor Dravid and Laxman. Dhawan and Vijay may not be Sehwag and Gambhir, but I'll settle for them.

I think you mean Dinesh Karthik. Dinesh Mongia, despite having a shoddy technique and few attacking shots, was never picked for the test team... :((

When Viru entered Test team, he had a decent FC record. Agarwal doesn't sem suited for longer format - poor FC record.

I think Dinesh Mongia had a good technique, a rare Indian left hander with good technique but was played in wrong format. I remember he once was the highest run getter in Ranji. We long have had this habit of judging player based on his one day game.

nope. He played against England in 2014. He was like rabbit caught in headlights, there.
