Ajinkya rahane - Scored top knocks with 4 centuries including a great 146 at the MCG on the boxing day.Twin centuries at Delhi and a match saving 126 at no 3 in colombo. Not to forget his 98 in Fatullah . Had a series average of 57 against Australia. Other good knocks include 81 at Brisbane and 62 at Adelaide. Always plays for the team . Worth to mention is selfless attitude shown by sacrificing his position.Has been the best slip catcher for India-22 catches. Scored 941 in the 12 matches played this year at an avg of 49.5 .

Murali Vijay - The monk has by far been the best opener we had had in a while. Has been the most consistent and dependable batsmen . Scored centuries everywhere . Scored 924 runs this year with an average of 54 . Despite having scored only two centuries- one at Brisbane and the other at Fatullah-  his other knock which were as good as any century include his 99 at Adelaide,80 at the SCG, 82 at Colombo, and 75 at Mohali on a difficult track.

Ravinchandran Ashwin - Bowler of the year for his team. Literally spun a web of spin around the opposition.69 wickets this year . Fastest to 150 wickets. 2 ten wicket hauls and 7 five wicket hauls. He was the man of the series in both the Sri-lanka series as well as the SA series.

Rahane has scored 3 test centuries in 2015. The MCG test century was in 2014.

I actually intentionally included the complete Australia series for all the three players even  though half of it was in 2014. Forgot to mention it in the OP.

If you do then Kohli also comes into the picture as one of the contenders because he averaged 85+  in that series with 4 centuries.

Just check how much some of the averages and performances change if the Australia series is included

Yes I saw that.

What I actually did was first selected the 3 most consistent and best test players of this year in all the 4 test series and then went to looking at the stats. Undoubtedly kholi has performed well but I thought he lacked consistency and failed under pressure. He's probably the 4th person on this list. The others option is always open.

merely stats weren't the only basis on which I listed these three.

I know.

Which is why I gave a complete list of all the  test matches  for both batting and bowling...along with the opposition as well as country and ground on which they were played. ( Fans can make an informed choice rather than from impression only )

Consistency of Rahane and Kohli has been quite similar during this period starting from the Australian test series.( good but not great )

If we consider great  consistency then only Vijay and Ashwin would make the list.

If we consider supreme match winning potential then only Ashwin would make the list

Rahane got the edge over kholi because of his catching. India has struggled with its slip catching in the past and we know how important it is to hold on to those especially with the bowler we have. Rahane has changed all that.

The catching part is very true. Just saying that if the Australian test series is included then Kohli should be one of the contenders although he would not win.
