for me: the order in which Indian cricket legends brought most glory to the team until this date...

1) Tendulkar

2) Dhoni

3) Kapil Dev

4) Ganguly

5-6) Gavaskar/Dravid

7) Kumble

Considering all areas like captaincy, batting, bowling and fielding...it is very tough to decide

 

Kumble --- Won most domestic test series almost single-handedly in his playing days. Test series are most  important among cricket  experts.

Kapil --  Won the First World Cup for India as captain and player. This win changed India's image as a team. He made Indians beleive that they can become pace bowlers at international level. Would have a better image if he had mentored and promoted young Indian fast bowlers.

Ganguly -- As a captain he changed the brand of cricket we play, made our team very aggressive and made us       believe that we can do well  in overseas tests. Cricket is a team sport and he improved the concept of  team in Indian cricket.                

Tendulkar --  He remained at the top for 24 years. So difficult in any sport. The greatest run-machine the world has ever seen.

Gavaskar --  Showed the world that it is possible to score heavily against fast bowling, as an opener, with great      mastery without wearing  helmets.

Dhoni -- As captain he won a 50-over world cup and a 20 over one. One of the best ODI finishers ever.   I would have ranked him much higher if he had quit captaincy in 2012  and not lost so many away test series.

Srinath -- Showed the world that India can produce fast, bouncy bowlers who can injure batsmen as well as  take  wickets. Made upcoming Indian pacers beleive that they can be genuinely quick bowlers.

Kohli -- New age Indian cricketer. Aggressive, fearless and wants to win at all costs as a captain. Promotes wicket- taking bowlers and scores heavily on fast, bouncy pitches. He should go up in this ranking after he finishes his career.

Sehwag -- Redefined how test opening is done. SR of 84 and average of 49 as a test opener !! Wow.  

Dravid -- Technically correct batsman and run-machine.

 

p.s -   I have only considered the players whom I have seen play.

nope kapil was rated as India's player of the century by even a bcci poll and he definitely was biggest mvp for India.

had the highest individual score in odi, at one point was the highest wicket taker in odis and tests.

world cup winning captain.

as great as sachin was we will get another great batsmen but Kapil was indian crickets biggest mvp ever and a hole that has not been filled 22 years after his retirement.

my top 10 

1. Sachin -emerged as the 3rd best batsman of all time .

2.Kapil - the greatest Indian all rounder & the best allrounder of the FAB 4 OF 80s.

3.Sunil Gavaskar- one of the ATG  opening  batsman of all time.was  good one day opener too.

4. Dravid - Definitely an ATG batsman who played several crucial knocks for India.Was a very good one day batsman too.

5.Dhoni - One of the best ever one day batsman.A good test batsman.A very good wicket keeper.A good captain.

All combined to form an ATG player.

6.Vinoo Mankad - a class all rounder of Kapil's calibre. Lags longevity though.

7.Ganguly   -a good test player of over 100 tests with 42 avg:.not upto the mark in all countries was his main problem. With over  10000 runs, he was a great one day player too..A very good captain too 

8.Virender Sehwag - explosive  opener. Massive subcontinent player.but lagged in swinging conditions.A very good one day player too.

9.Anil Kumble- very good  leg spinner with huge longevity.Deadly in India.But only good at the most else where.A very good

one day player too.

10.V.V.S Laxman - nearly ATG test batsman. Played some crucial inns all round the world.Almost impressive record in all countries.but was only an avg: to good  one day player.

I  have just stated those features or achievements  of each player that have been most impactful on the evolving of Indian cricket to the next level.  

• Test series wins
• 50-over World Cup wins and reaching finals
• Good performance in overseas test series   and
• to a lesser extent, World T20 wins

these are the achievements of a team that establishes real pedigree for the team.....and I have tried to point out the features and / or achievements of players which have directly or indirectly contributed to this.

Why did you miss Zaheer Khan? Srinath started the trend, but Zaheer took it to a different level when he, around 2007 till atleast 2010,2011 was the world's top bowler. No other Indian pace bowler has reached that height and no other indian pace bowler has created the havoc in batsmen mind as Zak did.
