He did well there. If he had opened then would have scored more runs than Dhawan for sure. If anything our lower order sucked in Australia. Fearless brand of cricket yes. But, looking at this team, after Dhoni and Pandya, there isn't much batting either. You look at other teams and they have tailenders who can bat a bit. India needs to find some players who can do a job with the bat and ball too. 

 

Can't be one dimensional in this day and age.

From all these "insights", it appears as if after captaining for so long, Dhoni probably thinks nothing makes a huge difference so he turned the auto pilot on where a) he picks up 11 players to play the whole tournament. These players play irrespective of horses for courses, b) when Ind is batting first, the batsmen at the crease decide what the target should be so 1. If Rahane is batting, the ideal target, according to him, could be 180, and 2. If someone like Gayle is playing, the ideal target, according to him, could be 240 so they play accordingly irrespective of whether the pitch is actually a 180 one or a 240 one

 

Against stronger teams and with this type of captaincy, Ind best chance would be when the conditions are sporting, and when Ind is chasing (so everyone knows what the target is and how to approach it without wasting 2-3 overs in the PP)

 

Iirc, vs WI, Ind only scored 15 in the first 3 when the batsmen were unnesessarily assessing the already known conditions. This is an example of where Ind lost out on many of its runs as some of the other teams would have tried to get more runs

The issue here is not the batting after Dhoni and Pandya as the lower order batsmen hardly get to bat in T20's. Instead we have to strengthen our top and middle order batting with some big hitters who play fearless cricket. Dhawan, Rahane are not suited for T20's and Raina is a sitting duck against fast bowlers for many years now and is woefully out of form now and Yuvi is past it. Need these players to be replaced by some of these youngters - Iyer, Nair, Mayank, Samson, Hooda, Mandeep, Rishabh, SKY etc.

I remember at one point Kohli said in a post match interview that Rohit failed and he had to be cautious in his approach. We needed explosive start to post a huge score. Pandya batted top 4 for Baroda and top scored in SMA trophy.
