5 batsmen strategy?

You can always lose a few quick wickets on a bowler friendly track.  Would an Indian XI with 5 batsmen be able to get to a fighting total from 150/5?  I doubt it.  And if you get too far below a par score, it becomes very difficult to save the game from that point.

This is not going to work against quality bowling attacks. We will be in trouble more often than not.

It will be difficult to bounce back. But even with 6 batsmen, Ind could be 180/6 .... Which is why each batsman will take his own time and try to get a big score so that Ind avoids being in such a situation .... I guess, 2 out of 5 will seek to hit 100s .... Many will complain about Ind's boring batting approach but it will be effective 

 

Generally speaking, Ind would seek to make 600 to 700 runs in a test (both innings combined). With 5 bowlers, Ind has additional capabilities with the ball 

 

Best way to strengthen the batting is to discover/develop genuine WK and bowling all-rounders

I think  since   (a) our problem is shortage of a batsman and  (b)  the primary purpose of the 5th bowler is to give rest to the top bowlers while maintaining pressure from his end ....

 

We should look for a proper batsman who is a decent accurate spinner and a proper batsman who is a decent accurate medium-pacer/ pacer....to take care of spinning and seaming/ bouncy  tracks.

 

A proper batsman/ wicket-keeper should be the other think which we should look to develop. Like Rishabh Pant when he gets sufficient FC experience.

As if we have never been in a problem with 6 batsman. The fab 5 era had 6 batsman yet we saw many collapses. We can play as many batsman we want but ultimately its the bowlers who ll win u games. A 5th bowler is a must, we need to find a good all rounder and work towards improving batting of tail. 

Its easy to say we need this we need that, reality is there is no batsman who can bowl 10-12 overs of 2-3 batsman who can share those overs and neither do we have proper all rounder. We also do not have good wk batsman so it hurts more. 

But we gotta play with watever we have and the best chance in such case is to play 5 bowlers.

It could work both ways. With only 5 batsmen players will take more responsibility to not give their wicket away which is also important. If Ashwin and Bhuvi develop into good bowling all rounders then we can have atleast one of them in XI. Similarly we require a solid WK bat and Saha is not the answer.

This will only work of we have a solid Wk-Bat in the long run .

Another flip side of this is , it puts a lot of pressure on the batsmen , forget 150/5 ..we have very little chance of coming back from a 40/3 kind of situations . They also need to be careful on where and when they play an extra bowler .

7-4 combination is suitable for test cricket I guess. Its not Indian Bowlers Effort, Its the wicket turned to flat on 5th day, So any bowler will have hard time. Hard Luck!!

7-4 doesnt work for any team, your main bowlers doesnt get rest and if u give a ball to part timer his few over could change the whole momentum. Even pakistan's team life would be a lot easy once hafeez is cleared as all the main bowlers would get rest and they would be able to bowl shorter spell with full intensity. 

Most teams have good Batting-bowling all rounder-

Aus- Mitch Marsh

Eng- stokes, Moeen ali, woakes.

Sa- duminy, elgar, morris, Parnell.

Sl- Matthews

WI- Holder, Chase, BRathwitte

Bang- Shakib
