Ultimate_Game Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 This series against NZ was the right time to plan for the future and addressing issues that have plagued us in the recent past but the BCCI and selectors have botched it big time. Given that we had only 8 odis left before Champions Trophy every game was like gold dust for us but I don't think the BCCI top brass cares. Here are a few things that should have been addresses but didn't... 1. A big hitting opening option - Instead of trying out somebody new like Rishab Pant or Sanju Samson in the opening role, we once again wasted chances on Rahane. I don't know what the selectors see in Rahane as he's played 70 odis and lost us the last T20 WC, and it's pretty easy to see he isn't cut out to be a short format batsman. He's present day VVS Laxman and needs to be in the same category as players such as Murali Vijay and Pujara, i.e., players who should be limited to Tests. 2. Succession plan for Dhoni - MSD is on his last legs and it's imperative we groom players who can take over from him. It would be great we identify youngsters who can take over from him and play them as batsman much the same way Australia handled Healy to Gilchrist transition. Go with Rishab Pant or Samson and let them spend time with the team so they can take over when the time comes. KL Rahul should be more of a specialist batsman and not pushed to be the long term wkt-keeper batsman. 3. Lower order hitters - Good to see selectors went with Pandya but they missed a few tricks by not resting Kohli and not blooding youngsters such as Sarfraz. Sarfraz is someone who needs to be tried out in shorter formats at the earliest. He has the same temperament as Kohli and has the knack of showing up in tough situations. Saw it at the u-19 level and needs to be given a few chances at the top level. Really wanted to see more of Jadhav and youngsters like Sarfraz but alas selectors don't think that needs to happen. Crookbond Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 We already have Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul as "back up" openers. There is no succession plan for Dhoni because he is not going away anytime until the Champion's Trophy. Sarfaraz as a hitter can be tried out in T20s, not ODIs. tweaker 1
Ankit_sharma03 Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 (edited) Its not easy to create a back up of a legend like Dhoni, Samson has been given so many chances now selectors cant do much if he doesnt show consistency n leaves keeping for one season of ranji Its not easy creating a backup of any legend, till date we couldnt find someone like yuvraj singh. In case of rahane well he has quality and he deserves a chance the only thing he has lacked is strike rotation now if he cant learn that we cant blame selectors. About u-19 kids its not easy to fast track them as there is huge diff btw u-19, domestic and international. We all saw what happened to Unmukt chand when he was bought to ground by brett lee's pace. Sarfraz well he didnt improve his fitness when kohli told him last to last ipl. Indians caps cant be gifted it has to be earned as well Yes we need big hitting option and KL rahul has given us that but do we have the heart to drop dhawan for him. even if dhawan has done well KL rahul at top will give u more balance. Can we keep team ahead of individuals???? Edited October 23, 2016 by Ankit_sharma03 tweaker 1
tweaker Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Half of the first choice side is rested .if the regulars Dhawan ,Rahul,Ashwin,Jadeja ,Bhuvi returns this side will be different alltogether. It will make a huge difference when Dhawan or Rahul is batting as a opener or Shami is bowling with Bumrah in.the death. Dhoni.' successor is ready in Kohli .Dhoni is still fit & carry out for 1year & now he is a perfect batsmen for no 4.

gakgupta Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Keep away from sarfaraz, Pant for now.....they need to play atleast 2 seasons before they should be selected.....otherwise we will have one more yuvi or raina in our hands..... tweaker 1

Yuvi, Kaif, Zak (I think), Kohli etc. made their debuts immediately after their U-19 days and pretty much got going and had successful careers. Anyway, it's not about a new young player or an experienced domestic player, it's about what are the Indian ODI team's gaps and which type of players would be best suited to fill those gaps. tweaker 1

A-tours are a chance, he has done decent in a-tours but is decent enough to push his case and replace someone like MS As far as grooming goes,A-tours are for grooming only He himself choose to leave Wicket keeping for a season last year and then how can u expect him to get selected as a keeper. Keeping is no part time job. What about his last domestic season which was very poor. When a player is selected everything is being considered. If u have to get selected and tht to u have replace a stalwart like dhoni well u have to do a lot more than that. tweaker 1

rkt.india Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Also, Samson kept whole season last year in ranji trophy, this year too.

But that would impact his keeping and it did in early few games of ipl, why wud u risk that at an international game when even his batting isnt so reliable. Keeping also gets better with time n regular match practice

Last season, he was keeper as well as captain and that suffered his form. It was a bit too much responsibility for a 21 year old. tweaker 1

Exactly that did affect his form, so u can only be selected when ur in good form. Cant blame selectors here at all they still persisted with on A-tours. Earning a national caps needs a lot more. HE would get his opportunity somewhere but he has to keep on performing and give no chance to selectors to think of someone else. He did well in Aus- A so now carry on in domestic n further. As far as pressure is concerned that will be more when u play for national team and it only increases with time 3 hours ago, rkt.india said: Also, Samson kept whole season last year in ranji trophy, this year too. This year ranji season has jus begun and good that he has time coz i dnt see him getting selected in test or Forget CT .He has time to polish his skill and he is a permanent on Ind-A. I think selectors n dravid are handling him really well . Its good he has time to polish his skiils as dhoni n saha both have raised the standards of keeping. All he has to do is keep performing so that when there is need selectors dont have to look around , he should be the best ready option. Lets see how he goes this season as he started with a 100 and then havent done well in following games. Hope he has a gr8 season ahead tweaker 1
Ultimate_Game Posted October 24, 2016 Author Posted October 24, 2016 I get that it's not that easy to bring in youngsters but sometimes an injection of youth is needed by the team. Also, we need youngsters to take over from Dhoni and slot in at 6 or 7 for the lower order hitter role. We still have Dhoni for some time so why not let the youngsters learn from the master rather than be faced in a situation where Dhoni hangs up his boot and we are stuck figuring out what to do. As for Rahane, why he's in shorter formats (T20s & odis) and actually considered to be a fit for the same beats me big time. We have likes of Kedar Jadhav, KL Rahul, Manish Pandey already along with upcoming youngsters like Rishab Pant, Sarfraz, Samson, Karun Nair etc. so why not try them instead of going with a tested & tried failure? Rahane has been around the limited overs squad for a few years now and has played 70 odis, which is quite a lot and so far the only thing he has proven is he's not fit to play shorter formats. He has been tried in the middle order and also in the top order and the results are the same. He can neither start quickly nor has the big shots to make it up for the slack once he's set. He's in the VVS Laxman, Pujara, Murali Vijay mould and should be considered only for Tests. Mosher and tweaker 2
maniac Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Apart from Dhoni who debuted in the Mid 20's....every player who had some amount of success or a lot of success for India debuted very young Age at time of debut Kohli-19 year old Rohit-20 yr old Ishant-19 year old Harbhajan-18 year old Sachin-16 year old Irfan Pathan-19 year old Yuvraj Singh-19 year old Pujara-21 year old Jadeja-20 year old Raina-19 year old Now we have age at time of debut Jadhav-29 year old M.Pandey-26 year old Rayudu-28 year old Binny-30 year old Pankaj SIngh-29 year old In recent squads we have also played Nehra,Yuvraj and Harbhajan Yes there are exceptions Pandya-22 year old Bumrah-22 year old Sran-23 year old That's about it....Where are the exciting 18-19 year olds? tweaker and Mosher 2

Yuvi and Raina have won a lot of games for India in T20 and ODI...They were real match winners.....Now yes they were failures at the test arena...so 3 points to consider here. 1)They would have waited long enough to make test debuts anyways with a middle order that included of SRT,Dravid,Ganguly,Laxman 2)I don't think playing 2-3 years of domestics would have made a huge deal of difference to their natural techniques anyways 3)Waiting for a long time on them would have meant some older players in the LOI side which would have been a problem So pulling the trigger on them early benefitted India in more ways. Kohli was brought into the ODI side at 19..Rahane made T20 and ODI debut before tests pretty early too ....did that impact their test game? Infcact despite playing T20's and ODI's before tests did not help Rahane's LOI game but he became a gun test player. I always think when you see an exciting talent...you have to pull the trigger on it. Edited October 24, 2016 by maniac tweaker 1
