Don't you think Kohli should get rest for a couple of games?

International teams don't function like that. The test series vs. England is deemed to be one of the toughest series across formats for us this season, given our poor record against England in tests  in the recent past.

 

The captain not playing voluntarily in a match in such a series would be deemed as a sign of running away from a fight and would never never happen in actual life.

 

He struggles only on rank turners....played a good knock in the Eden gardens in a low scoring match with some help for seamers and the pitch displaying uneven bounce.  But, then again, most batsmen, especially these days, do struggle on rank turners.  I can't think of any  definite better choice to replace him on spinning tracks.

that was a hypothetical suggestion, not a serious one. I don't see any reason for a batsman to be rested. Rahul Dravid played 93 test matches without missing one.  Case with bowlers is different. What is the need for resting an inform batsman that too from his strongest format!

Dravid did not have to play all 3 formats + the IPL for most of his career.

 

I am a bit worried about all our all-format + IPL  players getting burned out faster.

May not be the best time to rest with Champions Trophy just 4 matches away. India is looking for a settled batting order before that...

Still IPL and T20s have only taken place of ODIs and tests we used to play. Year still consists of 365 days. Dont think these guys are playing more cricket than those guys played.

After Kohli  debuted in test matches, we have played 55 tests in 5.25 years. So, 10.5 tests per year.

 

During Dravid's playing period in tests for a little over 15.5 years, we had played 164 tests....so 10.6 tests per year.

Also keep in mind, a lot of players have gone on record to say that T20s are more physically exhausting than ODIs.  Because every ball is so critical, it takes a lot out of the players to be that switched on constantly.

Our ODI batting needs a reality check and that won't be possible if Kohli is playing.  

 

Agree with the latter, of resting Kohli to see how the team does without him around. (not so good lately) But resting him because he's been playing too much cricket is BS, to be fair. He did get his rest during the Zimbabwe tour. And don't think he would wanted himself to be rested.

It is not  just the hours played but the match days involved, where you have to be totally focused and mentally involved.  Infact, T20 games are played with a lot more intensity every ball.

 

There are also the T20Is and the Mini IPL ( went by a different name previously )

 

p.s - ODIs are officially 7 hours, not 8. They do extend beyond that but so do T20s beyond the official 3 hours.
