And you know that how ?

I havent seen any Govt statement claiming they would stop terrorism in Kashmir or phase out human trafficking by this move .

lol at reasonable tax rate ? all these theories applies for mature economies like US/EU , India is a different animal and your text book method of solving this was never going to work .

This is necessitated to tackle counterfeiting Indian banknotes, to effectively nullify black money hoarded in cash and curb funding of terrorism with fake notes.

They did.

NEW DELHI: India's tax authorities have begun cracking down on benami assets and those who deposited large amounts of cash in the aftermath of demonetisation but haven't yet filed returns as it intensifies the war against black money.

The income tax department has already seized 541 properties and frozen bank accounts holding funds of about Rs 1,800 crore, said a top department official, adding that more action is expected soon.

"Big focus would be on benami properties and action on persons who have not filed returns even after their cash deposits during demonetisation were detected," the official said.

Some of these are assets belonging to high-profile politicians and their relatives, the official said. The department could soon start auctioning some of these seized assets after due legal process.

where does this cycle end ?

1) Tax dodgers / corrupt people criticize the govt. for anti-corruption steps.

2) Tax  dodgers / corrupt people get caught for dodging taxes / corrupt.

3) They blame the govt for targeting them.

You can either:

1) Pray the govt. is doing the the right thing & not just targetting the opposition.

2) Trust the corrupt people to stop being corrupt.

It's a successful 1 year, and it's only going to get more successful. The latter part is the key. Look at foreign countries, even a 5 year old bank transaction can sometimes be inquired by the government. It's gonna be the same case here as well.  A huge data and profiling is being done.

Let's disagree. It brought in a reality check in many ways, whether to informal economy, banking loopholes, corrupt babus. The benefits of DeMo will only be enhanced in future.

I have no doubt about this. It was one of the boldest and the best decisions any govt has ever taken.

Can't let something like this happen and get away with it.
