If and when the party splits and contests independently, Mulayam's SP seems to be doomed. If Akhilesh stitches an alliance with Congress, he might be able to do decently. But UP is always a little unpredictable to gauge and anything could happen between now and when elections are held. On the face of it, it seems like a good move on the part of Akhilesh to wash his hands off all the sins committed by his party by Mulayam/Shivpal's goons as he concludes his term.
