Texan Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Making Kohli captain of all 3 formats + IPL (which is not negotiable since it is the franchise's prerogative) means that we are guaranteeing an early burnout for Kohli. I don't think any captain in World cricket can survive 5-6 years captaining all formats without either losing their creative juices or completely becoming listless in their captaincy and cricketing performances. We have to preserve Kohli for Test captaincy. I would make Rohit Sharma the ODI captain and for T20s either Sharma or Ashwin. As Test captain, Kohli has been very impressive, so not selecting him as captain has more to do with preserving him for the long run than any criticism of his captaincy. But selectors are very very likely to make him captain of all formats. The first 2-3 years captaining all formats might work for Kohli, but need to seriously consider if that is workable over the long term.

However BCCI and selectors should acknowledge workload and burnout is a very real concern and work with Kohli to figure out the Vice Captain and let this VC lead the team in a few series (e.g., against Zim, B'desh, WI or maybe an easy home series etc.). BCCI and selectors need to ensure it is Kohli's team and he's on board with the "big picture" plan moving forward in terms of sitting out a few easy/inconsequential series. ravishingravi Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 I would back Ashwin. We could also then have a plan b to Kohli. Kohli, while he has done well in India, tactically has not impressed. We need to have an alternative in place.
