Last time CAB indulged in "feliciatio", India Pakistan T20 WC game had to be shortened by 2 overs due to time lost to Politicians handing over shawls. I will become a Gangu hater if this time around overs get chopped because of this kind of nonsense. beetle, tweaker and GoldenSun 3

How does KL Rahul fit into this mix. I was a big backer for Rahane getting an extended run as opener before NZ series - felt he could be an upgrade over Dhawan against top bowling away from home - for Champ trophy, WC etc. But Jinx has shown a temperamental failure to make it count in the chances he has gotten. I have to say, not a fan of him getting to open this time around. The only way this makes sense is that KL Rahul is in the team in addition to, which I don't see happening easily. tweaker 1
maniac Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Playing in India these days has become a lottery...whoever chases wins 9/10 times....England are a better LOI unit but they are not that head and shoulders ahead....so better prediction is whoever wins toss and bats 2nd will win tweaker 1
sandeep Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 With a 3 game series, whoever wins the 1st one likely to win the series - bit of a lottery this series. I would have viewed England as 60-40 favorites but for their batsmen's glaring weakness against spin. If they even do just OK at handling the spinners, then they will be extremely tough to beat. tweaker 1
tweaker Posted January 13, 2017 Author Posted January 13, 2017 Chief curator of Pune has said that the pitch would be a flat one and it would aid strokeplay and the match thus promises to run fest.

Good. I want to see flat tracks where England can handle the spin - that will be the best challenge for Team India. And they need to be pushed and challenged to force the needed evolution in their batting plans. GoldenSun and YCCC 2

Bowlers around the world need to learn to handle these pitches as most ODIs are played on belting batting wickets. As we know limited overs cricket is so heavily loaded in the batsman's favour. England should find room for Billings in the starting XI. I know the incumbents are doing pretty well, but the guy looks quality. England are one decent spinner and a Mitchell Starc away from absolutely dominating ODI cricket. They've really got the batting side sorted out nicely. Fact that the likes of Billings and Bairstow are on the bench says it all really. GoldenSun 1

Morgan should certainly not be keeping those guys out of the side. He is a definite weak link and the team doesn't need his captaincy, as was shown in Bangladesh. GoldenSun 1

Maybe, but isn't he instrumental in setting up the mindset and triggering the turn-around in the England ODI setup? Would be overly harsh to throw him out as the first guy to be replaced. And to be fair, England are able to execute an aggressive batting strategy, by getting their top guys to bat selflessly - prioritize innings momentum ahead of personal scores. Now if you turn around and use the lack of personal scores against the captain, that will go against the exact philosophy that has led to the team's success in the first place. I'm sure the fact that he's Irish, not English, doesn't sing the anthem, etc doesn't buy him any extra love from the fan-base either. GoldenSun 1

If there are credible alternatives, with regards to the playing side of things and the captaincy, then these should be utilised. I can't speak for the England team, but they're such a closely knit group, I don't think it would make too much difference to the dynamics in the dressing room. Every England player interview I read makes reference to competition for places, and that this is a good thing. I don't see why the captain should be exempt from this healthy competition. I know this is in contrast to my views on the Cook situation (I want him to stay) and feel that stability would be a good thing going into the SA series in the summer, then the Ashes. I don't see any alternatives at the moment for the Test captaincy. Also we might just have found two good top order batsmen, so I wouldn't want to lose another one straight away.

I'm inclined to agree with you on the Cook situation. He's close to being done, but not there yet. For Captaincy as well as batting. And I'm not convinced that Root will handle captaincy well without impacting his batting. He's too valuable a test batsman for England to risk him unless absolutely necessary. But disagree with you on Morgan - teams are greater than the sum of their parts, and individual numbers don't always look good for ODI batsmen batting lower than 4. Its not just a question of plug-and-play with names, regardless of whether Morgain is captain or not. GoldenSun 1
sandeep Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 As long as we win a toss out of the next 2 games, we should win the series. I just don't want to see any turning tracks though. More of the roads like the 1st game. More 340+ scores by England - that's more important to me than the game or series results. tweaker 1
