Assumptions:  All players are fit and available for selection, including Rohit Sharma and Shami.

My ODI XI

Rohit Sharma

Shikhar Dhawan

KL Rahul

VK

Dhoni

Manish Pandey

Hardik Pandya

R Jadeja

R Ashwin

M Shami

J Bumrah

  • VK and KL should share the #3 slot  - if we lose an early wicket, KL comes in, with the aim to keep the innings momentum going, especially in the powerplay.  If we get a good start and its already past the 14th 15th over, VK comes in at #3.
  • Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvi, Umesh, Rahane and Axar Patel are the backups.  Pant should be rotated in and given opportunity whenever possible.
  • Golu Kuldeep plays whenever we can rest Ashwin, and Axar backs up Jadeja.  Bhuvi and Umesh are the spare pacers, while Rahane is the spare tire for top order batting.
  • Keep the search going for the next-gen Suresh Raina - batsman who can score quickly without needing a lot of balls to get set - a la Yuvi, Raina, Pandya, Yusuf.  Best if he can contribute a handful of overs too.  Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya and their ilk to be monitored closely in Syed Mushtaq tourney as well as IPL.

T20:

Rohit Sharma

Rishabh Pant

KL Rahul

VK

Suryakumar Yadav

Hardik Pandya

Dhoni / Manish Pandey

Mishra

Ashwin

Shami

Bumrah

Kuldeep (next man in if any spinner is to be replaced), Jadeja, Bhuvi, Manish Pandey.

Surya Yadav has flashed the potential to play the maxwell/buttler type of innings in the past and is one of the few Indian batsmen who have very good control and ability with the reverse sweeps and paddles.  This type of batsmen really make things difficult for opposing bowlers and captains in terms of setting fields and determining bowling plans.  Wouldn't mind seeing him in the mix, especially if he does well in Syed Mushtaq and IPL.

Good teams. But Pandey's batting position is too low either he has to bat at 4/5 or should not be in the playing 11 at all. He is not a big hitter. Rather have Pant batting at no.6. Pant can also play the role of the floater if an early wicket falls. Rahul, Kohli and Dhoni can build the innings and also Rahul and Kohli can change gears when needed. Kuldeep needs to be in the playing 11 in T20's in place of Mishra.

I am really not sure about which is Pant's best position in ODIs.We need a fast opener as well as a big hitter down the order.Should decide the XI based on the success of Dhawan in England series

Agree that Pandey should either be at 4/5 or not in the team.  He will replace Dhoni on the batting front once MS retires.

A future batting lineup of  Rohit, Pant, KL Rahul, VK, Pandey, Pandya, Hooda/Krunal/desi Symonds-maxwell type, will restore India's ODI batting to its rightful status as an ominous threatening juggernaut that makes teams think that they need 25 runs above par to have a chance to win.

Formula should be - have 3 guys who are habituated to murder bowlers at the top, at least one of which can switch gears if required.  2 guys in the middle who control the ODI innings from 15-40 - VK is the best ever at this.  And then 2 guys after them who on their day will get you 10 runs an over.  We need a decent mix of RH and LH bats, and also the ability to get about 12-15 overs from this top 7.  That's how Team India won the World cup in 2011.

Pandey isnt good enoguh to be a top 4 for Batsman. He takes too many risks and gung ho in his approach as he showed in New Zealand series.Better of playing him at six and strengthening the batting order.

Kohli has been super successful in both ODIs and T20Is  at no.3 and I don't see him changing his batting position.

Need to see a little bit of more Krunal Pandya....Hardik was fast tracked because he had batting ability+could hit 140K's-so he was at the right place at the right time-so totally ok with that

Krunal had one good IPL season and so did Negi and we say how he turned out...Is Krunal better than Axar and Negi?

What I'm arguing for would effectively make #4 the #3 spot - I don't want the fall of an early wicket to force India into accumulate/consolidate mode.  Send in a Pant or a KL Rahul and keep attacking.   Consolidate if 2 wickets fall, or VK back at #3 if the 1st 2 last into the 15th over even while going after the bowling.  Goal should be to get close to 120 in the 1st 15, and I don't want to sacrifice VK in the pursuit of that if we lose one in the 1st 10 overs.  Its high time Team India started aiming higher with the bat in ODIs.

I understand what you are trying to say but I was suggesting what is more likely to happen in practice.

I would send a Pant or a Rahul as one of the openers.

Knowing Kohli, I don't see him coming at no.4 in LOIs , whatever the situation.

Ps kohli should always bat 3

also pant shouod be 6 . We crave power 10 to 20 over s to go . Him 6 and Hardik 7 could be solution

We are masters of the middle overs in ODIs - we do OK up front only if one or both of the openers fire, and we have been pretty ordinary in the last 10 overs.  So yes, you are right, we are desperately lacking power down the order.  Pant and Pandya could be the guys for the job.  But the whole mentality needs to change.  Can't have the openers tuk-tuking in the 1st 15 and ask #5,6 and 7 to get us 150 in the last 12 overs all the time.
