But boy, wasn't I wrong. Dude seems to have no weakness what so ever - plays spin well, equally capable while facing seam and swing, scored runs all around the world against all opponents. Has he already surpassed the likes of Alan Border, Ricky Ponting, GIlchrist etc. and only 2nd to Bradman? Discuss Edited March 16, 2017 by Austin 3:!6

Ponting boosted those stats later in his career. Couldnt play spin and hence avg only 23 in India. Smith has no such problems.

Smith has only played some 55 tests.Yet he is compared to some proven ATG batsmen. And what not he is even quoted as overtaking Sachin. When doing so keep in mind that players like Border,Ponting, Sachin etc etc played against several ATG bowlers( who avg:ed under 25). Take the case of Sachin. He played against Hadlee,Imran,Wasim,Waqar,Warne,Mcgrath,Murali,Ambrose,Walsh,Bishop,Donald,Pollock,Steyn and made his runs. For Smith only Steyn as of now is the only bowler with sub 25 avg: .Philander might join him in the long run. Rabada not sure. Ashwin & jadeja is almost sure to go way past 25 avg: when they plays a lot in swinging conditions. So just taking bat avg: and comparing is absolute senseless.

rtmohanlal Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 no ... the best batsman of todays is AB Devilliers. He avg:s over 50 in 2 main formats.Has 40+ avg: in tests in all countries just like Smith. Smith i would place at no:2 .Way ahead of Kohli in tests but way behind in one dayers. 3rd Kohli with 50 avg in all formats but a paltry 13 avg in tests in ENG.

HE actually makes batting look easy specially more than many elegant looking players who keeps getting chances on this notion only. What matters is how effective he is....
